I'm not sure how many of you out there are Australian or if you are Australian if you're old enough to vote but I thought I'd start a topic about the Federal Election to be held late August.

I personally will be voting Greens for a few reasons. First of all because their policies are going to be of the best benefit for the environment with strict policies on issues like nuclear power/weapons and also their policies for clean energy technologies are the most comprehensive out of all parties I have researched. I also like their ideas of lowering the voting age to 16 because it gives people who've left school and are doing apprenticeships the say they deserve, after all they are working full time and are directly affected by the choices of parliament. Also they have policies against corporate donations to government parties which I think should have been set in place a long time ago especially for cigarette, alcohol and oil companies. They also want to give more to public schools than what their private counterparts receive which is long overdue. They also want to revitalize the CSIRO and CRC so that they can continue to perform world-class research. They also want to decriminalize the cultivation of marijuana and use marijuana as medicine.

While I'm realistic and know that the Greens probably won't be voted in, at least in my electorate I believe their vision to be the best of all the parties and am therefore supporting the Greens!

You'll probably be lucky to find five active Australians on this forum, and most likely only one interested in politics.

I'll be voting Liberal. It wouldn't matter which way I voted, Liberal would still win. In fact, Mr. Abbott himself is the representative of our electorate.

    Politics is wonderfully boring.

I'm quite aware of that but I do know some members on here that are interested in international politics. Is there any particular reason your voting for Liberal?

    Greens :)
Nut as for who I would like to see win, I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place, the Libs have crappy environmental and NBN policies, and the labor party is incompetent and divided and for some random reason got rid of a perfectly good PM which screams of instability. I also would like to see more compassion towards asylum seekers.

Do you have parties like Republican and Democrat like in the U.S.?

If so I'm for the Republican guy. ;)

The only party in Australia which is remotely like the republicans is Family First, and nobody votes for them, they only got 1 seat in the senate through preferences. Other than that, the right-most major party, The Liberals, is perhaps maybe a little further right than the democrats, all other parties being left of it.

What do Australian users think of the latest opinion polls, which shows the Liberals having a 2 party preferred lead over Labor, 52 - 48, and Abbot rising in the preferred PM rating too to 41% to Gillard's 49%?

I'll be voting for Liberal. I was in favour of John Howard as well.

Then some idiots voted Rudd in. He talks smart but he really has no clue.

    And then Gillard backstabbed him.

^ Maybe this argument isn't exactly thorough or even making sense. But that's the way I vote and I'm sure others do as well (which is prob. why we have such a crap elected gov. xD)

If I could vote, I would vote for the Greens. If they were in power then I would be able to vote, apparently :)
