You buy the original item. It morphs a couple times, usually about once a week.
The end result is that you have say 5-7 wearables. There's usually a random bonus item you can get and whatever also.
Sunnyneo's site is down at the moment but they have a guide showing all the past MME's and what they morphed into.

I'll start stalking it right before the morph is supposed to happen to see if anyone's found leaked images of the future stages.

Correct. While the MME is still transforming, it will only be one item. Whenever it reaches it's final stage, you will receive all of the past items in your inventory. Then you can trade/sell those. 1 MME = about 5 different items.
