No, it's dentists.

They're all insane. You have to be a little crazy and obsessive-compulsive to stare at teeth all day. They all get into the profession because it's high paying, and they can afford to take ten or twelve weeks a year off to go and do precisely this kind of stupid shit (killing a great cat) to forget about their miserable existences.

I... wanted to be a Dentist :/

I can't help it I like teeth

you just made a sound argument. i shall avoid dentists for the rest of my life.

Haha. Just avoid becoming one and you should be good. The world needs dentists. Shitty, morally bankrupt dentists. But that doesn't mean you have to suffer through that.

Not about that life.
LOL Rocket don't take my dentist hate to heart - I only hate practicing dentists :p

It's a shame he's apparently got out of Zimbabwe already, he would probably be facing 15 years in prison otherwise. The lion which was worth $50k to him dead would have been worth millions alive in tourist income...

How much is a badger worth in tourist income?

Just wondering, how do you feel about the animal farms where cows, pigs, chickens, etc are bred by the hundreds just to be chopped up and shipped to your local grocery store/butcher for you to eat?

Unfortunately my life only runs in 45 minute increments.

I would have to say that considering I don't eat those things that should tell you my feelings enough.

There are other posts on this site noting my lack of consumption. However I can easily delve into a long story about how I've systematically cut meat out of my system over the past 12 years and have since consumed it less than a dozen times for both ethical, environmental and physical reasonings. However if you want to cite the last time that I consumed meat, I can tell you that it ended with me in tears over it.

I understand people hunting for their food, especially in food deserts. It is not what I find ideal but I am not so naive to think all people can/would subscribe to my beliefs on the matter. I think there is a large difference between hunting for something that you are going to consume, not waste & hopefully treat as respectfully as possible and the hunting of a living creature for sport. They are my beliefs, many of which I ascribe to lean on the side of lessening the suffering of living things and attempting to protect the Earth.

This is the statement the douchecanoe released

"In early July, I was in Zimbabwe on a bow hunting trip for big game. I hired several professional guides and they secured all proper permits. To my knowledge, everything about this trip was legal and properly handled and conducted. I had no idea that the lion I took was a known, local favorite, was collared and part of a study until the end of the hunt. I relied on the expertise of my local professional guides to ensure a legal hunt. I have not been contacted by authorities in Zimbabwe or in the U.S. about this situation, but will assist them in any inquiries they may have. Again, I deeply regret that my pursuit of an activity I love and practice responsibly and legally resulted in the taking of this lion."

Just because something is legal doesn't make it right and the reverse, just because something is illegal doesn't make it wrong hold very true to me. This is an example of that imo.

"(...) an activity I love and practice responsibly (...)"

You have to have a really fucked up brain to think that hunting an animal just for fun is acting responsibly.

Unless I'm very much mistaken, that letter was written by his lawyer. It reeks of legalese.

"responsibly and legally" is them trying to sound like they did due diligence. And the part about not knowing about the collar... isn't that kinda hard to miss?

Unless he hunts with his eyes closed, doesn't know how much trackers cost, or was aiming at the bird on the lion's head, it's pretty ridiculous to assert you didn't know it was a protected animal.

You're probably right about the lawyer, it sounds like an opening statement...

And they forgot to mention the part where he allured the animal out of the national park boundaries (assuming that happened). If he didn't know the poor thing was in a protected environment, why would he have the need to allure him? :hypocrite:

Err, I guess I'm okay with the thought of hunting, but only if it's needed for food, absolutely not if it's just for fun..

I wouldn't do it myself, though. But then again, I live close to the city, hunting is impossible here, the 'wildest' animal I've ever seen is a rat, close to the river :p

I'm okay with hunting if you're hunting for food, but killing an animal just for the sake of killing it is sick. Poor Cecil.

The dentist looks like a serial killer anyway.

http://www.wildcru.org/

Has some more info on Cecil.

Despite our sadness, as scientists, we seek to learn from this event, and to find some benefit from it. A very important aspect of lion conservation is what we call the perturbation effect: namely the cascading effects on the surviving lions of the death of one of them – in brief, we have found that when a male lion is killed, because of the way their society works, a likely consequence is the overthrow and death of other adult male members of his weakened coalition (normally of brothers), and the subsequent infanticide of his cubs by the incoming new coalition of males. We are working hard to study the consequences of Cecil's death on his pride and their neighbours, so that we learn as much as possible. This requires hard work, manpower and expensive equipment, as does our wider work on lion conservation in Zimbabwe and elsewhere in Africa.

All the more reason why people shouldn't be hunting lions.
