Didn't see one of those, so let's make this: What do you think is the purpose of / in life? What do you think, have you figured out or decided is yours?

This was inspired by a chat I had, still am having with a person here, who also encouraged me to talk more to you guys so here I am. :p

I might post my own later, but just want to hear from you guys first really. It's an important topic after all and prolly worth hearing from different views.

I don't necessarily have a certain purpose in mind that I think I should fulfill, but I know something that I'd like to do is to affect someone in the way that my high school band director affected me. My dad was never really there for me and we really don't get along (I was depressed for a long while and they didn't even notice (or maybe they just didn't care? Dunno.)... when I told them why they almost kicked me out of the house) very well, but my band director was always there for me even if it was just to talk. He was really a role model for me, and I can't imagine myself being the person I am today without him being there for me and being so accepting. He's helped me become a better person and is the most important person in my life. I want to do the same for one of my students someday; I want to affect someone the way he affected me. I believe that is my purpose in life.

This better not be referencing me. I did no such thing and deserve no such slander. I wrote to you condescending and belittling rhetorical questions based on how you're just another cretin perfect for the cesspool that is NeoCodex. If you managed to twist that into so form of uplifting encouragement from me, that is your problem, not mine.

And I told you kinda-ish my answer. I want to write another book that is at least 90% mine and create a game that'll last longer past my death.

No one else wants to talk about this? It's a rather important topic you know, I'm sure you've all at least thought about it.

Do you know what humans are?

We're bits of the universe...that think.  We're the universe sitting up thinking.

That's, I think, the purpose in life.  To learn, to grow, to experience, to teach.

I would generally agree with that quite a bit. But, do you think, like, each person has their own purpose in life as well, whether it is given/discovered/created etc by the way?

I don't think there is a purpose.

Many people find that thought a bit scary but I find it to be incredibly freeing knowing that I'm not bound by fate or answerable to a 'higher power'.

I have the freedom to decide my own purpose, or even change it should I wish to.

I'm not altogether without responsibility though, I still have a sense of morality, I have to face the consequences of my actions.

There is also the knowledge that this life is likely the only life I will have, as far as I'm aware there are no do-overs, so I have to make each moment count.

My purpose in life is to find something I am passionate about and change it! I want to leave my mark somewhere in this world. I am very passionate about psychology and criminal justice! That's why I am double majoring in it! So, there is something that involves both areas that I found that excites me. Solitary Confinement in America. It is the worst! It is horrible on so many levels. However, I do see the reason why we need solitary confinement. That being said, with my Ph.D. that I will attain in a later life, I will begin my research to prove that solitary confinement effects each person's psychological/mental/emotional/physical health. With this information, I want to reform solitary confinement to be something that won't kill a person's soul inside and out and turn them into a zombie. I get we need it because prisoners need to be punished for their wrong doings that occur while they are serving time for the crime they committed out in the real world. I will leave it at this for right now, to open up any possible discussion on this topic, because I know many people have very different views on prison in general. :)

Yes, both... People have an individual purpose in life in addition to the purpose applied to every person.

To enjoy and have fun, without any troubles.

Too bad that will never happen, with limited money.

So I'm just stuck in the rat-race, slaving my life away for money.

Biologically speaking; to procreate. All we do everyday is to get closer to procreating. We work so we have money for food we need to stay healthy and be able to procreate.

And please, try not to get certain urges from reading this.

My purpose in life is to be happy. I know I can't be happy all the time, there is no light without the darkness etc. but ya feel me?

I don't think there is a purpose. We are all insignificant, floating in an endless sea of meaninglessness until we die.

i think the purpose of life is to help those around you. to be selfless and kind. Life isn't about money or fame, but about your soul and other souls. i like to think im like that, but in reality im far from it. with time i hope i learn to let go my materialistic side and focus more on my compassionate and giving side. i want to be someone special in the sense of positive energy, i want people to know that i welcome them with open arms and i am here to listen and help in any way that i can.

when i finish my degree i hope i can begin my path and do something good :)

To learn lessons. I believe in reincarnation so I believe that in every life we learn a core set of lessons: selflessness, integrity, love... All the good and bad things.

I believe that everyone has a set purpose in life. We are made for a reason and one day we will realize it. People come into the world with a purpose to do good or bad. No one really knows until the time is right.

Oftentimes, I've tried to figure out the purpose of living, the destiny of humanity, and its role in this universe. Alas, I'm not sure there is or we will ever find an answer to that. At the end of all time, however, nothing means anything.

The purpose of human beings, and the only thing I could conclude, is to further the survival of its species through any means, whether to take care of its own, create its own, cooperate with its own, and destroy those that threaten its survival. We are just animals after all, animals with more complex thinking patterns. (I'm going to avoid the question of why strive for survival if we all die anyway => that is too much for right now haha). Anything outside of that is our own individually selected purposes, for what we believe we want to do and what not.

Of course, I'm not religious, so I won't drag destiny and virtue and what not in. That's not for me to declare in that sense.

I think the purpose in life is to just go to school, get a job, then just have fun and enjoy what you like doing after you have a career that you enjoy doing.

honestly, if I didn't have an obligation to give back to what was given me, I'd rather just not exist

Everyone finds their own purpose...

I'm not sure if i found mine yet, but it's becoming pretty clear to me that it has something to do with creating.

Creating little things, being the one that made little, but really powerful stuff to other people, being able to ACTUALLY use words to change something, be it a mood, a day, a relationship, friendship, whatever.

Not even a "I need to do stuff so people actually remember me when I die" but more like a "I really enjoy these little life-sparks and i could think about them a lot, day after day" <3.

My purpose is to probably help people in some way. I don't know in what way, but somehow I'll help people.
