I just recently updated my old processor (AMD Athlon 800) to a new AMD Duron 1.8 Ghz. The computer still works fine, but Windows XP only recognizes the processor as a 1.35 Ghz CPU. I'm stumped as to what I need to do for the comp to recognize the correct speed.

I'm running Windows XP SP1 (The computer w/ the new CPU has no internet access... so I haven't had any updates installed).

My motherboard is an FIC AZ11, if that helps..

what's the actual chip name?

if it's an AMD 1800 they actually run at about 1.3, 1.4 not the 'expected' 1.8 - this is because AMD's naming system at the ti'me was to give "the speed the chip would be if it was an Intel chip" or something like that

It's not an AMD 1800... this is what I got:

Duron 1.8G - 1800MHz (133x13.5) - 1.5v - 64KB L2 (Applebred)

ok - that's the si'mple answer LOL

here's the complicated one

you've probably not got your jumpers set correctly

you've probalby got them set too
(100x13.5)
not
(133x13.5)

these are either on your board (physical jumpers)
or in your BIOS - virtual jumpers

Okay...

Can you explain how to change the jumpers?

I'm kind of a n00b when it comes to this kind of thing..

if you've got the manual - that will help

Jumpers look like either of two types,
little blue switches (quite often in groups of 4)

or pins comming out of a black plastic block (some will have little plastic things joining 2 of them together)

here's a pic of your motherboard, I suspect the jumpers are either the blue boxes, or the switches on the VERY right of the pic (right of the white socket)

You will need the manual to know what to set the jumpers too

Okay... I got the board jumpers set, but nothing displays on the monitor!

The computer turns on, but my monitor displays "No input or cable disconnected."

Any ideas?

that doesn't sound good - double check the settings (133) is the one you're looking for
it could be the memory you've got can't cope with 133 FSB - in which case you'll have to set them back

Memory?

What do mean?

Do you mean like the RAM, or did you mean to say motherboard?

yup the RAM - if it's just 100, then you'll probably have to keep the jumpers set to 100

What the crap?

Okay... so I have two sticks of 128MB ram, one is PC100, the other is PC100/133, for a total of 256MB.

I tried booting off of just the PC100/133 Stick, with the jumper set at 133. Nothing happened.

I put the jumper back, and all went fine, until I logged on and was told that my copy of windows had to be activated?

I activated it 2 months ago when I installed the friggin' OS!

I turned the comp off, put the other stick of RAM back in, and booted the comp up. I'm still being told that my copy of windows has to be activated.

What the hell is going on here?

EDIT: Lol, post #666.

windows XP has a "Feature" if you replace a certain amount of items you need to re-activate it (I think)

But I only switched around RAM chips... grr...

Although, I have put in a new Video card, a new processor, a new floppy drive, and put in a firewire card...

Damn Microsoft.
