Try this:

sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

Choose your video card driver in the next menu (look it up if you don't know it.)

Check the resolution you're trying to use in the next menu, then hit enter.

Then, restart x (control+alt+delete)

Let me know if that doesn't work.

Is your system totally updated?

Do:

apt-get update
apt-get upgrade

Then restart and try it again...I've heard people having problems once but it working the next time.

Re-edit that xorg.conf file from above and make sure the HorizSync and VertRefresh values are there...if they're not, just add them as below.

Section "Monitor"
Identifier "xyz"
HorizSync 30-100
VertRefresh 50-150

You could have avoided all that hassle by just running this command in the beginning:
CODE
sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-ati

I wish I had checked the thread earlier tongue.gif. By you enabling restricted drivers though, I think that's what you ended up doing anyway...even though you didn't see the backend stuff...not sure on that though.

His driver was being fenicky. And when he used the Restricted Driver Manager he basically did that command the long way. After "glxgears" kept killing his box I got him to use Envy and reboot. Solved his problem and he gets 8000+ FPS on glxgears. biggrin.gif
