Because my mother was on food stamps and welfare while I was a child and she went to college. She now makes 6 figures and has paid the amount she received back in taxes many, many times over. Do not criticize a system with a very small amount of abusers. Everything is wrongly taken advantage of in some form. Praise a system which helps many people get their lives on track.

My parents were also on welfare after having me. That said, they had just immigrated and couldn't speak English well at all. Luckily, all went well and they are also both making high 6 figures, though almost all of that money goes back home.
