They always do that, as it's their job...but the future is far wider than any professor can dare pretend to offer for availability. I'm an old fart and have been through positions ranging from academic to privately held to federal during my raggedy career, and I am more than happy at any time to lend an ear or share my experiences (you have my email, we'll chat when ya want). ;) PLEASE don't let professors set the whole tone though, as their world is actually the tiniest and most restricted of all...you have the WORLD at your fingertips.
