Here is a simple trick to figuring out asian letters. Chinese characters looks like a checkerboard or the gridding on waffles. Korean letters have lots of ovals inside them. Japanese is neither.

Well, not when you're talking about kanji because Chinese and Japanese use them.

If you know what kanji are, you don't need tips from Scot to tell the difference between east asian logograms and syllabaries.
