The first chapter in a document, do you generally call that a preface or an introduction in English?

Introduction for sure. A preface tells why you're writing, an introduction tells what you're writing.
Also, a prologue outlines a narrative that is necessary to a story before the main story begins.

Exactly @Cass. A preface gives reasoning, a prologue gives backstory, and an intro gives a chance for the reader to learn a bit about what they're reading before they get to it.
