This is really more for people from the UK and/or people with some sort of knowledge of the business world.

I have an essay to write which is basically concerned with a company from the UK that has had a big change in their macro or microenvironment. I was assigned to Royal Mail (awesome, right? Posted Image)

However, my lecturer told me I would have to take into account the Royal Mail's "unique ownership structure". When I asked him what he meant, he wouldn't elaborate. I can't really find anything on the net about it at the minute. It's government owed so I don't know what structure it would have other than simply being owned by the government. It's up for privatisation but as it stands it is still government owned.

So my question is, what would you say the ownership structure of the Royal Mail is?

Thanks in advance for any help.

I think its likley to have something to do with the recent confirmation that the government is pushing for Public ownership.

Im not 100% whats happend recently but back in september/october im sure there was talk about a staff share holding scheme?

We have a Conservative government, they won't be nationalising anything.

Yeah, employees were promised a stake in the company. (Not a steak, although, that would be rather nice.)

Do you really think they're a separate political party now? They're only in the Coalition to get a ministerial car and to try to justify their existence (poorly)...

" This essay assignment is an opportunity for you to select an example of an instance where a UK firm in either the financial services, automotive or transportation & logistics industries has found that its business activity has been influenced by its business environment and use theories and models from the module to explain and analyse the actions taken by the selected firm to address the challenges and or opportunities that this created for the business."

That's the title we were given. I'm going with PESTEL & MOST as the theories/models to explain it. I don't know any others. Posted Image

Not a UK'er..But I do read the Financial Times and have heard of Royal Mail. Maybe the "Special structure" of Royal Mail is due to the fact that its a government entity, like the United States Postal Service, USPS, but its still a corporation regulated by consumer interests. And now its seeking to be a private entity which is seeking to be bought, even by foreign investors. That private buyers will be allowed to own up to 90% of Royal Mail, while the Post Office may be mutualised.

Again, not a UK'er so all this may be garbage =P..But I do notice similarties with the USPS in that the union workers wages and pensions are bringing in huge deficits for the groups.
