My garage was actually broken into about a year back. I was so pissed because they stole my bike but when I calmed down, I realized they were pretty dumb. Of all the things to take, only a bike? I felt even more insulted since there was no finesse involved into the breaking in of my garage. They just brute forced the door down...

Some thieves don't know shit to steal, I'll agree with that. I've gotten the little honda symbol on my car stolen, and a bike headlight pryed off one time.

That reminds me, if they do break into a roadie geek's garage, there goes about $20K worth of bikes/components.

Ugh. I definitely feel sympathy for you, OP.
Thieving and being an asshole by stealing shit is never okay and not justifiable. The people the thieves steal from WORKED for their stuff and to steal it like that is just unforgivable.
I've thankfully never had our home broken into before ... and hope it never happens.

ok, but in north america, thieving is just wrong. I have to say though some people just don't protect their belongings... usually when I go to the gym -> in the locker room people don't even lock up their stuff =p
