2) Is Heavy Robe of Thievery needed? I've heard it's a "must have" for 1 player battling, yet why can't I just use a cheap stealer and withdraw?

2. yes, stop being cheap; because you're not thinking ahead. Try grinding thousands of battles in a day and see if you still feel the same way.

I wouldn't call it being cheap, I would call it being impatient, but thanks. I asked because I remember girofalcon did not start working on defence until he was at like the 200 boost.1. Yes;no;trust me, it is.

"as 1-player opponents will eventually get to a point where your defense won't nearly be as effective (since their stats usually reach far beyond your own by the time you have maxed out)." from In-Depth Battlepedia

Hi, care to explain why defense is needed for 1-player? I'm only training by lab since I don't really play the BD unless it's a plot requirement.

Because eventually you won't be able to just 3 shot opponents and they'll actually be able to kill you before you an kill them.

What if we take the newly released SoL into consideration? Withdrawing might be annoying but saving on training for defense would be a nice plus.
Defense is pretty cheap to train though, especially with Armored Neggs. Even if you get to the point where Armored Neggs are the most cost efficient way to train for defense, it'll just be a small dent in the wallet.

This. Trust this guy he's got a lot of bd experience. I'm not a fan of gshield or ftab but I definitely recommend downsize. Most of my blocking comes from faerie abilities but thats hard to fit in considering burrow/sink can take up a lot. Even then I still need trained defense. So definitely train defense.1. Yes;no;trust me, it is.

But about the stealing I dont know it hasn't come in so much handy for me. But do keep your pet prepared. I hear it can change battles.

Especially when it's someone with a 100% freezer. If you don't get lucky and freeze on the same turn, ouch.

Bent Fork +HRoT vs some opponents removes their main damage source and maims another, or in other cases it steals and maims the same thing.
