A big key for getting the old codex back would be to make topics that can generate discussion that isn't completely inane. And then to post in them.

I know I haven't been around but I think that these days - people come and go only to play neopets. They don't really stay and chat or try to get to know people. With that being said, I don't approve of the contest thingy.
If you're going to have that,
a.) you're probably going to have a few idiots who want to win it but don't really want to contribute so you get a lot of stupid spam
b.) a system that rewards community members for talking to other community members (what?)

To be honest, I think a lot of what was said is right. Try as we all might - a lot of new people are here for one of three reasons to either get their stupid post up so they spam constantly, to get on the trading post and buy/sell what they need and return to their reclusive lifestyle when they're done and to get answers to problems

I think that if older member keep posting interesting stuff, they will undoubtedly draw the attention of some intelligent newcomers. Yeah, you'll probably get a lot more spam posts and what not until you hit a member who actually wants to contribute but that's the way it's going to be.

That idea about forum mods would really help out. Who care if people dislike the fact that their posts are being voided and deleted? It's not a god given right to start out and get advanced member in a week or two. The way I see it, advanced members are people who have dedicated a lot of their time to help out or enrich the community. If the spammers don't like this, they can simply move on to a different site or pay the 5 dollars which is quite nominal. It's a modest fee to enjoy all the options you can play around with.

And I resent the comments about new members who don't have avatars/signatures are spammers who just want to hit the 500 benchmark :(

This I think is very true. People are around just to play neopets not to be apart of a community. That's why we changed our direction. We removed the multiple ranks and then focused on the products.

I feel like the best way to get the board back to whatever you want it to be is to lead by example. If you feel like the topics are boring, then make topics that you'd be interested in discussing. And I think the post downvoting system was a good idea. And if people decide to try to abuse the downvoting system then take that post out of their post count.

I found that things like rep (similar to downvote) are abused mostly by the older people who don't care about post count. These older people just do favorites. New people to favorites too but the post count would only hurt till they hit 500.

I think what STM is saying is also pretty accurate. What codex was before was a bunch of people ALL trying to develop the community. It was new and we all felt we were responsible to develop the site. In the past we could develop in any way and be safe but now we have to go about it in the right direction. I guess back then there was no right direction. I don't know I'm just thinking out loud...

About the idea to give the prizes via PMs. That was done before but TNT links the accounts some how, we have no idea.

I think he meant the differences between old and new codex.

They're explained right in the first post though. Oh well.

I mean if no one is up for building the site again, seeing as everyone is busy not much one person can do reviving this.

Stop looking over your shoulder and make something new or different.  Trying to revive old crap is always going to be weak because it can never live up to people's flawed memories of it.

    <loud sigh>

Okay, fine, I changed my notification options so that maybe I'll pay more attention.

It HAS been a while. ;) How have you been, Patrick?

Notification options? You actually use that shit? Hell, I haven't even used 'view new posts' since IPB changed the format a few upgrades ago. View active content seems somehow... lacking.

Indeed it has been a while :p I've been alright, I guess. Not really, actually. I should have stuck to online friends; my honest-to-god sack of meat and enzyme friends have gotten me into lots of trouble recently... fucking up my studies, building my addictions, and generally peer pressuring me. But that's life. I've cut the worst of them off, out of self preservation. But the trouble is, even the least troublesome of the pack are more than enough trouble to distract me from what's important.

How have you been Lindz? Am I spelling that right? I never can remember. You can probably relate - I know probably a dozen Lyndsays, Lindsays, Lindzays and Lindsies.

I've been okay.  I'm graduating in June, and I'll be running off to get a real job before long. :p

Sorry to hear you had problems with your friends, but good on you for shucking off the bad influences.

I've always felt that when a site, game, or forum starts out for the very first time is the best time to use it because everyone is new and works like a whole community that genuinely cares about each other. But as time passes some of those members leave which brings in new members that try to cater to the older members so they can quickly earn a "superstar" status that should be obtained through time spent with the community, but instead is earned because of who they befriend. So instead of having one whole community you now have a (or) clique(s) that one must "audition" for to be part of the would be community.

Adding different member groups would just create more cliques. A Gfx team would mean that people who enjoy doing things with graphics would only talk to other people on the gfx team so they can join it. Same with mods, etc.

Basically it's high school on the internet, sub the classes add the porn.
