Okay, I've basically got a fair bit of pure lying around. A little over 20m. I've also got another 15m in ETS. I'm sort of over autobuying, and my connection speed is trash so it just doesn't work well for me. I was wondering whether it would be possible to make some NP in other ways using this money. I've considered both owning a mall and investing in items. I'm very busy throughout the year and would only be able to play for ~1h a night at best, so I'm not sure if a mall is really viable for me. Alternatively, I've considered just buying an expensive retired piece of BD equipment like a sleep ray, but on the flip side this would pretty much involve me not playing at all and I'm not sure I would get bored. So a few questions in summary...

1) If you've owned a mall, how profitable would you describe it as being? Is it really worth the millions to invest in it?
2) Would ~22m be enough to start up a mall? I can always liquidate my ETS and bring it up to 35m.
3) How many hours a day of work is owning a mall?
4) Would a sleep ray be the best investment for me right now if I would choose to not own a mall?

I basically would just like to stop relying on ABing/RSing for now. It's very unreliable profit considering for my steep ping and I want to go legit from here on in (or at least semi-legit, using lower freeze rate programs). I know you can be smart about ABing but there is always an inherent risk that I would like to stop taking.

What exactly do you mean by "owning a mall"?

If you're talking about owning a gallery - it's probably not very profitable. Many people buy things to add to their collection and a lot of these collections are VERY HTS. Sometimes you gotta go a few hundred k below the TP price and you still won't get offers. If you're looking at owning a gallery, I doubt very many of them actually profit due to not many people actually desire these items and a lot of people do it for the challenge of amassing such a collection.

If you can't ab - spend money on the stock market. Figure out some low/high's that you would definitely sell at and just work off that. The profit is next to nothing but ehh, it's decent if you keep at it.

Additionally, you could look into sniping auctions although with a bad connection, it probably wouldn't work very well. You could always go back to playing flash games

I didn't really mean "owning" a mall, but rather being part of one.

I did some research though and I don't think 20m is quite enough, but I will see if it is worth it for me to liquidate some stuff.

    ....

He means a mall. ie. A mall is community of Neopets players with large shops that join up and take "spots." Spots meaning, one mall member will do toys, while the other does food and bakery (there are about 10 other spots besides these two). Mall members each do different spots. Most mall shops are generally a part of the main market.

EDIT: The Stock Market gives great profit. o.o You just have to be quite patient. In your case, if you're only gonna spend an hour or so a night, sticking in your 15k/night would be highly recommended even as just a supplementary form of income. (If you're not already doing so)

Yeah, I always buy my 15k shares. It's one of my dailies. But I'm really looking for a way of investing the entire sum.

Right. Well, with slightly less than enough to get into a mall, hording some retired items might be a good idea then. *shrug* My friend has a gallery of retired books he periodically adds to and otherwise just plays to buy stocks and do dailies. You could buy Ghostker-weapons and hope they retire. ;p But ya, I guess the retired item route may be your best bet. There isn't really a whole lot else to do for limited play-time (off the top of my head, anyway).

I would suggest investing in items -> namely retired or R101's (stamps, BD etc)

You could also wait and invest in plot prizes as some of them have exponential gains =p

I wouldn't really recommend stocks unless you have a lot of patience as it can take months to get the returns you are looking for.

Malling is very profitable, originally I started ABing to build funds to start malling o.o
I'm not close to enough NPs to start a full fledged shop, but 22m/35m is plenty to start malling with.

Retired consumables would be my choice... Malls take constant pricing, but I'm sure there's a program around here that'll do that... (Right? xD)
Also, 20 mill won't get you to the main shops which is where any shop owner in a mall would want to be...

Hmmm, what's a good example of a retired consumable? I was actually thinking of just buying 35m worth of DPP lol. Is peppermint stomach medicine technically retired? (even though it says special)

It's a recent Advent Price. They don't retire until 4-5 years later, but it is effectively retired.

A mall shop is one that focuses on only a certain item (I.E. Dark Faerie Quests items / plushies) to give people a place to buy items when on faerie quests (no shop wizard). This allows them to markup, with the more popular the mall (shop size, notice board frequency, returning customer frequency) able to markup much more.

You don't need a main market shop if you can build up a customer base o.o
Like my gambling shop generally had a lot of people who return to gamble more C:

Chia Flour shouldn't really be diminishing due to the steal trick. Items I'm fond of in my SDB are Y7-12 Usukicon bags, a few stacks of several halloween gamble bags, and some of the r101/180 stamps not from the Advent Calendar.

    is malling profitable?
I never saw how it would be. But yet it is.
I mean what newbie doesnt know how to use a shopwizard. Why would someone be willing to pay extra for an item?
And how do people get all the items to mall with....do they buy them from stores?

If you are looking for a long term investment, and are really impatient, then yes, retired items are great. Another great idea is BD items that are really practical for their price. These items tend to retire from time to time. If you hit one item then you have hit a jackpot. The item does have to be invaluable, meaning worth it at just about any price (Moehog Skull is an example of something like this). Off the top of my head nothing comes to mind, but H4000 helmets are always going to go up in price.

Everyone should know how to use the shop wizard, but who knows every single item in the game when looking for specific things?
Lets say Person A finds a mall shop on the SW (Not all items are OP), Person A is collecting plushies for their gallery and after obtaining that one plushie, notices the maller has a ton more that Person A does not have. Sure Person A can make a list of every single item found in their shop or use an Item Database, but who would want to do that? If people found you have a SW priced item that they want, they generally splurge on more things that are overpriced.

    ahhhhh i see
But does it garner THAT much profit?

Malling seems very elite and complicated lol....even more elite than the pro restockers..
