Here's the main site:

http://www-03.ibm.co...tion/us/watson/

This experiment represents an interesting step for computing.

The objective is to pit a computer against the questions of Jeopardy.

IBM has worked on a project that can take an abstract question, and leverage its resources to quickly determine an answer.

As a programmer, abstractness in the input is generally considered the bane of our existence. We like things predictable so that we can analyze the expected input and output a reliable answer.

Does anybody else (possibly someone with more programming experience... or maybe even someone with less experience?) have any thoughts on this project?

Over hyped, I firmly believe it will lose. Jeopardy uses humor and sarcasm sometimes; unless it wins I will just say its great people could make this, but its really (not a huge) a breakthrough.

    I agree wholeheartedly.

After watching some of the videos, it has become apparent that there are (obviously) some Jeopardy players that are capable of outplaying this system...

But the sheer fact that they can analyze natural language and (without internet assistance at game time) be competitive... I think it's fair to say that it is a large and exciting leap forward.

I think this is a pretty cool idea. If we took this concept and applied it to the Trading Post, we could skim prices for UB's.

Sl gave this a shot, but decided it was too risky. :p

I know. Someone needs to ban it and setup direct parameters for everyone to talk. That way it will be easier to make an AI.

Wow I think it is AWESOME!!! I worked on trying to decipher the np value of what trading post users are asking for each of their items which is MUCH simpler. But it was doable to a certain extent.

Like the example they gave: "Last night I shot an elephant in my pajamas"
    HAHA

I think this is incredibly cool!

oh rofl i see you guys mentioned this already. :p
for the ones that ask for neomail we should have the program send a neomail to the user asking for price and translate that, but sometimes they don't reply with a price or they just say really weird. like the watson demos talk of.

Aw dang. Is it going to be a real player versus 2 others? Or just a thing to test watson? I'm just wondering about the prize money. :p

The winner of the competition will receive $1 million, while the second- and third-place contestants will receive $300,000 and $200,000, respectively. Jennings and Rutter have pledged to donate half their winnings to charity, while IBM will donate 100% of Watson's winnings to charity.

Its machine vs two previous champions.

It was a pretty quick match. Watson did one totally wrong, meaning he had hi confidence and buzzed in first and gave the wrong answer. Another time he didn't know the answer, had low confidence, and the answer was the 2nd choice on his list.

But this thing is amazing, I just want this technology in a search engine, it would be absolutely amazing.

That Ken Jenning guy looks/sounds like a really annoying person...

"This is an avatar"... Lol They didn't say anything about learning though; so no, it's not like the terminator :p

Computer wtf! It got the daily double on the first one xD

    Ken: What is the 20's?
    Alex: No
    Watson: What is the 1920's?
Alex: Noo.... That's what Ken said...

    ^FAIL! xD

lol yeah it doesnt take into consideration any responses because i think they wanted it to be right on the first time without any help.

LOL One of the answers was like... "What title is lower than a squire in England but is usually held by a lawyer in the US?"

The answer was clearly Esquire, but Watson's 2nd choice was... "Ed".

In any case, he totally rocked the humans. I also welcome our new overlords.

I watched all three episodes on icefilms. Very impressive.. but scary.

Any Terminator fans that saw The Sarah Connor Chronicles?
Watson reminds me a whole helluva lot of John Henry. Terrifying.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yqRUo8cZNVI

The actor was surprisingly good, but when Watson sounded like him I was like... :lookaround:
I might rewatch and get my scary robot fix.
