Do you watch the Bachelor?

I don't really have a problem with it - I've never really seen a whole episode but the concept isn't so bad.
It's just a stretch on reality T.V shows. You take a normal situation (in this case, dating/finding somebody that you'll love), airing it on tv and throwing in some twists and turns. It's actually quite genius if you think about it. Nobody will watch (at least I hope not) a reality T.V show about two people dating for years and years and all the ups and downs of their relationship. Here, we have something that isn't all that interesting but you add multiple partners (which is ALWAYS bound to stir up drama which makes shows more interesting), decision making (you're basically choosing people that you think you would have a chance with from at first a few minutes of talking, then maybe a couple of hours with them, and then actual dates and etc), and then there's always the question of whether the girl loves you for you or your money.
I probably wouldn't follow a whole series through, but I can see its appeal.

I don't have a problem with the concept, per se. And I agree, real life dating would be pretty boring for an audience. I probably wouldn't mind so much if the "losers" just kind of shrugged their shoulders with an "oh well" attitude and left the show. But so many of them are actually devastated and that's the pathetic part. I've seen olympic athletes walk away after failing to win a medal after YEARS of dedication and training, and they walk away upright and dignified. It costs these women nothing to put on a fancy gown, paid for by the network, and flaunt themselves nationally for a few weeks of fame. Why not enjoy it and just have fun? Does marrying the bachelor really represent their hopes and dreams?

I don't think the two circumstances are comparable. Sports athletes are supposed to show poise and composure even in defeat (although - they actually do cry, or are on the verge of crying but you don't see the whole thing). Athletes compete all the time, and they (to some extent) get used to this stuff.
I'm not trying to justify their crying, but it's a whole different circumstance. I think that being crushed by somebody you like, maybe even love and getting crushed on national television might get to them. I mean most of these girls (I assume) are attractive and they probably haven't been dumped multiple times, or even dumped on national T.V for that matter.
I'm not saying that they should be crying, but I understand why they might.

Yeah, athletes are probably a bad comparison. But I guess 1) why would you risk getting dumped on national tv, and 2) How much could you feel for someone under those circumstances? It's not like there's a lot of quality alone time, unless I just don't understand how the show works. He spends 15 - 30 minutes in the hot tub with one beotch, then 25 minutes sipping wine with another beotch, until he's done sampling each of them. I mean really, how or why would you fall in love under these circumstances. I think perhaps it's more that they are embarrassed for not getting picked. If that's the case, I go back to #1 and ask why would you set yourself up for getting dumped on tv? Even if you don't get dumped and ultimately he picks you, are you really going to MARRY this guy?
BTW - what is the success rate for The Bachelor marriages?

I don't believe reality tv one bit. Just needs to be overly dramatic on purpose.

I mean seriously, ladies - you're not ugly - not even close. Hell, every single one of them is five times more gorgeous than I am, and I don't see why they have to be so desperate for the 'bachelor'. I haven't seen any episodes where the unchosen actually starts throwing fits, but that's kind of well, sad! I mean, it's TV. How much time do they even get to know the guy? It's not like they get some quiet time alone without a crew following them around. They don't even really know the bachelor, not really. That they get so hysterical is just, as I said, sad.
Granted the guys are good looking, but still. Good looks =/= awesome in my book.

As a female, I'm kind of disgusted, actually. It's one of the reasons I usually skip right pass it unless there's really nothing else to watch.

You should have seen that one show where the girl turned out to be a guy. Best show ever.

Didn't see it, but somehow I'm pretty sure that was no accident. Producers LOVE that kind of stuff on reality shows. They may have purposefully not told the bachelor or other girls in order to film a real reaction, but you can almost bet the producers knew about it.
