It was an over-arching cyber-security measure that, among other things, would create an office of cyberspace policy within the White House and a new cyber-security center within the Homeland Security Department.

See, they're just trying to get access to everyone's porn now so they don't have to pay for it. That's probably the most American thing I've heard in the past few years. Porn is expensive.

Also, this is a board for cheating on neopets. You're really going to get on my case?

Don't delude yourself; there is always, always room for any topic that can pertain to Oprahs minge.

Uh...No one would clear the shops. Then they'll hardly ever restock, nobody gets to buy any cheap items, and most of all...No customers.

    Serious though?
Try thinking of one reason when the internet should be shut off.
So if the president used it even once, it would be too many times, and shouldn't be a thing in the first place.

The reason they are claiming they would ever need it for would be if another country performed some sort of cyber attack against the U.S. and we needed to take all of our computers offline to protect them. If you ask me... it's just a ploy to limit communication between people in the case that we ever have protests/riots like they are having in Egypt.

    This times seideways eight.

If they can't protect their data, then they really need to reconsider their security protocol.

If that were the case, every branch of the government would have to support it and allow it.

That's how they get laws to pass man :) by disguising things that are harmful as something useful.

There would be massive revolt in the US if the internet shut down...NO INTERNETZ AND NO PRON MAKES HOMER SOMETHING SOMETHING, so to speak.

I doubt there would ever be a reason to shut down the internet... But if it happened, chaos would surely ensue.

With that in mind, I hope it happens.

That's not true. They are circumventing congress and passing it by executive order through the control over communications that the FCC possesses. (Which was recently expanded to include the internet.)

They are also attempting to put a clause into this executive order that it isn't up for judicial review. (I think that if a judge wanted, they could declare that line alone unconstitutional and then review the act... but I digress.)

So no... only the executive branch has to support it as it stands.

    "circumventing congress"

... uhm, tin foil hat doesn't suit you dude.

Also, if the government does circumvent congress which I'm sure they have in the past, don't you think they'd be a wee bit more quiet on having information released to the public? The American thing to do is usurp American rights in quiet.

Do you know what an executive order is? See Article II, Section I of the constitution. Do you think that congress has to approve of radio broadcasting? The FCC is under executive control and has recently claimed power over the internet as well.

So I really disapprove of the "tin foil hat" comment...

I can understand limiting the internet in terroristic cyber attacks, since our security is shit. How many times has China hacked our "secured" information. But, it doesn't seem like this is at all for an anti-government killswitch, but to protect America..Granted they should look for better ways in dealing with it instead of shutting down the internet..How about beefing up security?

I think you're referring to the implication of Art. II Sec. 2, as Sec. 1 just tells us how the president comes of office. And you meant the DHS was the one gaining this power.

Thank you for the corrections. I was typing while arguing with my gf on the phone. xD

The FCC has recently gained control over the internet, however... But you're right... It would be the DHS that would be gaining this power.

The Gov't is just butt-hurt from the epic wikileaks fail, and resultant "cyber terrorism" from "OMGS haxxors!!!"
They should learn not to do shady things that WILL be outed. This isn't the Mongolian empire. It's time to be accountable instead of trying to shut down the internet next time .

But isn't it easier to shut down the internet than actually explain and be accountable? Short answer: Yes.

    Long answer: Hell yes.
