Personally, Final Fantasy IX is the best. There are other Final Fantasies that are great as well, but nothing beats IX.

Probably my number one reason is that it was the last Final Fantasy that felt true to the series. When I play the game, I feel like I'm playing a sequel to the first. C: Yaknow?

Anywoooo~ What one is your favourite and why?

Actually, it's not really part of the series, but I really enjoyed Derge of Cerberus. Maybe it's because I could actually follow the story line. Many of the games, which follow the lives of many characters at once, tend to lose me quick. As for the actual series, I've only played a few games, but of those I'd say XII was my favorite. I enjoyed the different weapons you could use, the different enemies, and the many places you could explore.

I'm really enjoying XIII, but VII and VIII are still my absolute faves. X was really good, I really enjoyed the blitzball aspect even though I lost most of the time, but the sequel kinda ruined it for me. All the dressing up and crap. Boring. I stopped playing before I got 1/3 of the way though it.

I loved IX. I love having specialized roles and personalities.
I like VIII. Good story. Semi-specialized roles (based on their limit break basically xD) but did not like the fact that monsters scaled with you level wise. Made leveling pointless
I thought 7 was meh. I realize it's a classic, but classics are only classic to those who were present when it was a classic O.o a few years before my time
X was really good too. Story was pretty good, but I loved the fact that there were so many things to choose from! Not as many side quests, but still good.
I liked 12 too, but not as much as the others (more than 7 xD). The main character was boring and the story was... okay. Not the best
I was dissapointed in 13; it's a good game but it takes al ong time to really get into it and the story was kinda confusing at times O.o Obviously not enough side quests xD

1 + 2 were good, but seemed entirely different from the newer final fantasies :p

    I also loved tactics :3

    I love final fantasy xD

GO ahead and bash me on this, but my favorite ones are the first one (on the NES) and Crisis Core (on the PSP).

Those two sit on top of my list partly since

    1) As a kid that game came off to me having such an interesting/unique element into it. Main reason is probably since gaming background isn't really that "rich"; FFS I've only played one zelda game out of the series - much worse I've never even played some of the mainstream titles out there--eg Sonic, Metroid, Castlevania, Golden Sun, Megaman, then as for the more modern titles I haven't played a single CoD game in my life, etc...well you get the picture.

    2) Then Crisis Core just reminded me of the countless hours I've spent playing VII back when it was released. I guess I'll add in VII up there as my favorite, but terms of whatever game in the Final Fantasy franchise that got me hooked unto the story the most I'd say Crisis Core got me all hyped up the most.

VII was the first Final Fantasy I played, and for that reason as well as the deep story and massive quantity of side quests (hours upon hours of Chocobo Breeding and Racing? Yes plz) it will always be my favorite.

I really do like every game except the online ones, though, so call me a fanboy if you must.

EDIT: Oh, and fuck tactics. That is all.

Expanding on my previous assessment of Final Fantasies:

    Final Fantasy 1:
    Spoiler

This is a fun game, but it's hard as hell to go back to this from a newer Final Fantasy. Most of the time, you end up a little lost and wandering around... XD
My build was: Monk, Thief, White Mage, Black Mage

    Final Fantasy II
    Spoiler

I'm still working on beating this game. It's definitely a fun game, but I'm obsessive compulsively leveling my stats.

    Final Fantasy III
    Spoiler

I haven't played this one, but I will eventually.

    Final Fantasy IV
    Spoiler

I've played this a few times, but haven't beaten it. I'll get around to this one as well... XD

    Final Fantasy V
    Spoiler

This game is REALLY fun... as I love the job system. I'll be playing this again.

    Final Fantasy VI
    Spoiler

So many good characters with back story and a kick-ass storyline. This is my favorite of the pre-Playstation Final Fantasies.

    Final Fantasy VII
Seriously, this one is my favorite.
    Spoiler

    Sephiroth. Need I say more?

    Final Fantasy VIII
    Spoiler

I love the storyline of FF8, but I found the magic junctioning system made the characters too interchangeable.
Other than that, the game is amazing.

    Final Fantasy IX
    Spoiler

I loved the return to the job system. This one is definitely top-3.

    Final Fantasy X
    Spoiler

This game made for a great transition from PS -> PS2. Some scenes were awkward, but the character customizations that started with jobs and later opened up the way to job transitions was a fun new system.

    Final Fantasy XI
    Spoiler

    Square: "Pay monthly."
    Me: "No thank you."

    Final Fantasy XII
    Spoiler

I liked the gameplay to this, but the auto-battling system made it too damn easy.

jcrboy: Have you played XIII? I haven't played XII yet, and I probably never will. I've lost the connection to the game that previous ones gave.

I've heard mixed reviews concerning FFXIII, I've heard good and bad.

I don't own a PS3, so I'm just going to have to keep wondering how good that game is until I finally jump to the current generation of consoles.... XD

do you not own an xbox360 either? :o 'Cause it's available on both

They announced FFXIII-2 a few weeks ago, and thusly I am re-playing FFXIII.

It's definitely one of the hardest final fantasies out there. It's good if you like a linear game, not so much if you're a final fantasy fan boy (like me) and want side quests and "unlocked story lines" like in the past.

Still a good game, just not really final fantasy-esque

That being said I'll be buying the sequal 100% haha

    Fuck. Yes.

Forgot about XII. Ehh that one was alright, I'd say the battle system is what ruined it.

I'm so down for a remake of FFVII though on the PS3, so that way I'll have the reason to waste my precious dollars on one >:]

What is this shit about "Fuck Tactics"? Tactic, Tactics Advanced, Tactics Advanced 2 were all amazing games. Single race runs on Tactics has been some of the most rewarding gaming I've had. All moogle run ftw!

If you played it for any other reason than for fan service related interests, you did it wrong.

Gosh nobody's favorite is FFIX. Except Nilla...and me.
I mean , ffix was just entertaining all round. I wasn't clicking through stuff to get to the action.
It was nice to have such well developed characters, interesting situations, and well written and translated dialog to match.

I feel like the transition to voiceover was the worst mistake the FF genre ever made. Heros are better seen, not heard.

I'm starting to think that a remake of FF7 would be kind-of a travesty. I think I would die if the MASSIVE amount of dialog in FF7
    was all put into voiceover.
