Cover your mouth to protect against Radiation. Now I am worries.

They didn't say to cover their mouth to protect from radiation, depending on how old the plant is there could be anything like asbestos in the dust produced during the explosion so covering mouths isn't foolish advice.

Great, I'm where it says 750 rads.
    *gets out the dosimeter out*

EDIT: I don't trust the map. :p Looking for other sources... 750 rem (radians) is a LOT of radiation.

This incident is really going to hurt nuclear power proliferation though in the long-run though. Things were going so well with nuclear technology post-Chernobyl, and then this happens. Even if it's minor, people will point to it.

The sentence only spoke of radiation, and nothing else. But since it was not their direct words, they very well could have been talking about that, and the news changed it to make it seem like there is danger of radiation.

If you look at the map link. Its from an anti-nuclear power blog.... Yup....

Also, this is stupid that it should even effect nuclear plants in the future. This plant only failed because a 8.9 earthquake, and then a tsunami hit it. Just build the plan somewhere thats not on a fault line....

Also, this is almost exactly like the three mile island. The containment field is still 100% intact. And the reaction may or my not have melted the fuel. We dont know that, and that isn't a concern. Right now they are just pumping salt water into it to ensure that it stays cool, and then will eventually dig out the leftovers and bury it somewhere.

Its not like its going to explode or something :|

I understand that radiation is a dangerous thing but I have always felt that the USA dramatized it to a certain degree. I mean that map is ludicrious, come on.

Although I might have a completely different outlook on these things because I'm from Ukraine Posted Image

Personally, I enjoy the way the media says the containment "is holding", rather than "has held", implying that the whole place could go up at any second. The explosions were from venting dissociated coolant, which has now stopped.
The chance of further explosions at the first two reactors is low.

If they didn't make things seem dangerous, how would they keep everyone on the edge of panic all the time?

With 0 of those deaths being because of the nuclear plant.

Are people forgetting an EARTHQUAKE and a TSUNAMI hit japan?

"BBC FLASHNEWS: Japan's government confirms there is a radiation leak at Fukushima nuclear power plants. Asian countries should take necessary precautions. If rain comes, remain indoors the first 24 hours. Close doors & windows. Swab neck with betadine where the thyroid area is in case of radiation. Radiation may hit Phillipines starting at 4 pm today. The USGS also upgraded the magnitude of the earthquake to a 9.0 from 8.9. Yikes.

I also do not like this radiation thing. Let's hope the modern nuclear reactor designs don't let us down too much. I realize that a 9.0 magnitude earthquake is a hard thing to design for, but certainly engineers might be pointed at if any harm comes out of the reactor leaking anything. :/

"According to Space.com, the massive 8.9-magnitude earthquake off the eastern coast of Japan was so big, it altered the earth's rotation. NASA geophysicist Richard Gross says the tremor accelerated the earth's spin, shortening its 24-hour day by 1.8 microseconds. And that seems like a permanent thing."

So on top of that I guess we all need to worry about that now? Does anyone really understand how this actually will effect the world?

It means that over a year, we lose 0.66 milliseconds. NIST will probably just account for it, like they do any other perturbations the Earth faces.

I suspect that the gravitational attraction of comets and whatever else comes to visit, affects the rotation speed at the same time scale, so it should be fine. :p

Here's a interesting fact: The moon is actually slowing the rotation of the Earth slightly, every year. (NASA quotes 1.4 milliseconds/century of normal slowing). The earthquake made the rotation slightly faster, which offset this moon-slowing.

Love how they tell people to stay indoors even though that wouldn't do very much against radiation. <_< unless you have a concrete house..

also, love one of the comments on that page.

    Betadine for radiation?

I think they meant potassium iodine (which is being distributed in pill/tablet form in Japan) to prevent radioactive iodine from being absorbed.

    ..lemme find an article...

    http://www.npr.org/b...ation-threatens

edit: I guess you could swab some betadine as well since it has iodine in it but.. there are other iodine solutions & the pills are easier to obtain =/ But I do see that dk said that was a hoax so they're wrong on more than one count. :p
