So..I'm going to buy a used netbook and i've brought it down to 2 different ones that are in the same price range. I want something really fast and efficient but...i don't know as much about comps as alot of other people do. Care to lend a hand?

I'm stuck between

HP Mini 311-1025NR

and

Hannspree HANNSbook 12" Netbook

can someone please help me decide?

If you're expecting high performance you shouldn't be going for a netbook. =P

I have an HP Mini, I stopped using it after I got really frustrated with how small the screen size is. I ended up installing Ubuntu on it because Windows 7 was running too slow and that really improved the performance.

This review for the second one seems to really praise it. Note: the processor is clocked at 1.3GHz, so don't expect netbooks to be lightening fast.
    http://forum.noteboo...-1-netbook.html

And PS, make sure it doesn't come with Windows 7 Basic or whatever they call that shit. It's windows 7 with very very few features that they mask behind the word "basic". You can't even change your wallpaper(I'm not joking). I never felt so good about pirating windows as I did at that point.

I guess i just want something faster then the one i have now.
Im using a Acer Aspire One KAV60.

I actually read this wrong before the original post and thought "Wtf? High performance, get a netbook?" xD

but I totally agree. If you want performance, stay the hell away from netbooks. That is NOT their purpose.

I'd go with hannspree. The keyboard looks bigger than the HP Mini's and that's a big plus in my books.

Go with what Melchoire said. The screen size will piss you the fuck off.

I got one of those HP minis a year ago... hence my Mac LOL
Sorry, even with 2 8 cell batteries, I get a longer charge on this thing. Good luck! Posted Image

I bought the HP Mini that came with Windows 7 Basic. It was a white one decorated for like christmas or something (limited edition) I payed extra to get a bigger resolution on it because the screen was so tiny. Anyway, it was really really laggy ... not enough RAM and the processor was poo.. (Intel Atom)

THe keyboard is 90% of the size of the regular one so it feels weird. I'd always press the wrong keys.... Sorry XD
After like... seeing my friend use the Air as his main laptop because it was so hardcore I just can't ever buy a non-mac netbook ever again ever.
Try finding something by Asus within your price range because they're like the only other company I respect.

    :p

And what exactly do you want it for?

I dont do online gaming...I'd use it mostly for browsing and movies, torrenting.
I know that sounds plain but..i've never had mroe then 1gb ram on my comps. (those have 2 gb).
I do use a few PC games but..nothing too strenuous.

    Perfect :)
do you know which one has more range? (wifi)

Do you also want it to use for things such as note-taking / document writing (if you go to classes) etc? If so, is the keyboard going to be an issue for you as they are small..

I personally had an Asus EEEPC and thought it was great because it was so portable and small (until a can of coke exploded in my backpack and destroyed it's 8GB SSD). The one I had was pre-installed with Windows XP but I actually removed it and installed Windows 7 Home onto it (even though it only left me with 3.5gb of hdd space on the solid state drive, it ran so much faster on the netbook than XP did!).

Battery life is going to be an issue on all brands because they are so portable. They are generally only a 3cell or 4cell battery so 2-3 hours is going to be about the most you'll get out of it, less if you have all the wireless features turned on + set on it's highest settings for performance/graphics. Overall though these things are going to do what you want them to do.

I would really investigate your other options. Look at buying something refurbished rather than "used". Usually refurbished means it was 'damaged' or 'didnt work properly' when it was removed from the box so was exchanged for the client. They are fixed up properly, then repackaged, but because they have been opened by a customer, they can no longer be classified as 'new' and are then classified as 'refurbished', even though they've never really been used. Keep clear of ones that say 'rebuilt' instead of refurbished though.

With a "used" laptop, you have no idea what they have done to it. Have they dropped it a few times (or a lot of times)? Is there any damage to it? Do all the keys/functions work properly? Does it work 100% without issues?

Don't forget with these mini books, you're also not going to have a CD Drive.

    hmm..thanks for the heads up.
Small keyboards arent a problem for me as I have a Acer KAV60. The keyboard is suuuper tiny and i got used to it to the point where using reg keyboard is troublesome. I know more or less how to check comps for water/physical damage and wont hesitate to inspect it in front of the person selling it to me. (though they sent pics and the comp is a clean as a whistle)
Battery life...yeah thats tricky. For the Acer i have though, i purchased a bigger battery. Its...kind of clunky but it gave me about 6 to 7 hours of life. I think id do the same for the other ones.
would u happen to know which has more bat?

I guess the biggest prob for me is just not knowing which has more processing power. The hans has a bigger screen but...hp is a better known brand.

I'm not sure about that. I guess it would depend on the network card the manufacturer puts in there; honestly I think the difference would be marginal at best.

Also it looks like the HP Mini's mouse pad is not the frosted kind; are you sure you want that? They get really annoying...

Ever played with an ipod touch or iphone or any kind of touchscreen? They're very difficult to move your finger across if either surface has the slightest trace of moisture. Ever seen frosted glass? They have a "rough" surface and make it very easy to use.

    This is frosted:

I think the HP Mini that you want has the shitty kind. I don't know why they're not all frosted; so much easier to use. The HP Mini I have is frosted though.
