'NASA's planet-hunting Kepler spacecraft has confirmed the discovery of its first alien world in its host star's habitable zone — that just-right range of distances that could allow liquid water to exist — and found more than 1,000 new exoplanet candidates, researchers announced Monday.

The new finds bring the Kepler space telescope's total haul to 2,326 potential planets in its first 16 months of operation. These discoveries, if confirmed, would quadruple the current tally of worlds known to exist beyond our solar system, which recently topped 700.

The potentially habitable alien world, a first for Kepler, orbits a star very much like our own sun. The discovery brings scientists one step closer to finding a planet like our own — one that could conceivably harbor life, scientists said.

Interesting, makes me wish I'd be alive in 500 years, to see where this brings us

Obama says no. We don't get to go into space.

If we can get near-light speed going over the next 50 years or so you've got a chance of being around in 500 years. :p

Ones that stop you dying of old age before you get anywhere near it? Also, a nice hat.

What if we eventually do find a planet that DOES have life? Are people going to freak out? Probably.

If we find a planet that not only has the potential to harbor life, but one that has organisms on it (not just bacteria, but stuff like fish, deer, etc), I think they'd (the gov't) would keep it from us. Everyone would start panicking

In another article I read it said it was 600 light years away from earth.

5865696000000 miles away =1 light year away

But on the bright side, the telescope which discovered it was launched in 2009. It's amazing how far that thing has gone, and also, how far they are able to transmit information. I just love space stuff :3
(interestingly enough, the data that contained information about Keepler-22 was actually gathered from December 2009 to March 2010, but was only just released to the public as of yesterday.)

I've been trying to find clothes like this. Maybe they should invent that before worrying about what's in space.

If I'm not mistaken, what we are seeing is a snapshot of the Kepler system 600 years ago... because that's how long it took for it's images to reach us. Is that correct?

    Well it's 600 light-years away so yes, that's how light-years work, surprisingly.

So if they were looking back at us with basically the same technology, they'd see all the Europeans dying of the Black Plague or something?

Yep. Maybe you should go outside and point your ass to the sky with a "welcome to earth" tattoo spread across both cheeks, just in case they look again in the future.

Well they'd need much better technology than we currently have to see that kind of thing. :p All we can basically see is the light from a star which dims periodically as the planet passes between us and it and we know from that things like the estimated size of the planet and distance from its star etc.

By "basically the same technology" I assumed she meant an extremely advanced version of the technology we're using that allows them to even zoom close enough to see a tattooed ass. Hmm..

IMAGINE IF IT HAD MOTHA FUCKIN DINOSAURS ON IT? OH YEAHHHHHAHAHHAHAAHHHAAHHA. Chances are they would still be running around today if the moon wasn't such a douchebag. What if it's like the aliens from the Simpsons? Time to freeze myself and come back in a couple thousand years.
