A Higgs boson walks into a church, the priest says "We don’t allow Higgs bosons in here. You claim to be the God particle, and that is blasphemous!"

The Higgs boson says "But without me, how can you have mass?"

:D

Anyway: http://www.bbc.co.uk.../world-18702455

Cern scientists reporting from the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) have claimed the discovery of a new particle consistent with the Higgs boson.

The particle has been the subject of a 45-year hunt to explain how matter attains its mass.

Both of the Higgs boson-hunting experiments at the LHC see a level of certainty in their data worthy of a "discovery".

More work will be needed to be certain that what they see is a Higgs, however.

Prof Stephen Hawking tells the BBC's Pallab Ghosh the discovery has cost him $100
The results announced at Cern (European Organization for Nuclear Research), home of the LHC in Geneva, were met with loud applause and cheering.

Even though this isn't a definite announcement that the Higgs boson has been discovered, they still discovered something pretty interesting. :p

I wish I could tell my dad, but he's still asleep. He loves this kind of thing.

The Higgs boson says "But without me, how can you have mass?"

Love that joke :)

My physics class were wetting themselves about this today :D Some of them are going to CERN in a few days and everyone is super excited about hearing more on this discovery.

My teacher also said this new evidence is like 99.999 % reliable :) So yay, an argument that lasted nearly half a century is nearly over.

Yes, but now it will be the long wait to see what properties it has. Its existence at the appropriate energies does not mean that it does not have properties that go beyond the current Standard Model, and it will be interesting to see what further properties it does have, such as the strength of its coupling with other fields.

Ehh, five sigma is good enough to say it's probably a Higgs.
Cheers, fellow physicists!

Prof Stephen Hawking said Prof Higgs deserved a Nobel Prize for his work, but admitted the discovery of the new particle had come at a cost.
He said: “I had a bet with Gordon Kane of Michigan University that the Higgs particle wouldn’t be found. It seems I have just lost $100.”

But they are extending the program by 2 - 3 months to know what kind of boson it is, for sure.

(They know it is a Higgs like particle)
