I thought neopoints, like neopet levels couldn't go below 0 (Well, Neopets can't drop below level 1, but same idea)... though that would make sense.

Indeed people have. There was this one time.... in the past.... when a number of Codex members found an exploit and took advantage of it. Needless to say it didn't take TNT long to patch it and freeze their accounts.
