Our assumption in this experiment is that the community could have the ability to self-moderate the site to a certain degree by putting negative reputation points on posts that they do not agree with. Negative reputation points also allowed for users to filter away posts that don't meet a certain minimum reputation threshold. The belief was also that negative reputation would discourage the member from making these kinds of posts in the future.
We can see that this experiment has failed in a number of ways:
- Those who take negative reputation to heart often can't come up with an explanation for why they receive negative reputation. For some people, there's really no good reason why they receive negative reputation. When there actually is a reason there, people don't seem to learn from it. Many PMs and reports to staff are about negative reputation point "abuses", and it takes up a lot of our time to investigate these cases individually.
- Those who don't care about receiving negative reputation are free to make garbage posts and receive a large amount of negative reputation without any consequences.
