I was posting in the Labray topic as I often do, and I thought that we post an awful lot of information about our accounts on this site. Couldn't TNT figure out whose account is whose by simply tracking back, say, lab ray data or any other events that we often post about? Then freeze your account?

Would be a bit time consuming for them and even then I think they'd need more proof than just your last zap.
Also people could be lying about their last zap, unlikely I know, but still could happen.

    Could they? Yes.

Will they? Probably not. But it's always a possibility. You'll see some people are much less open with information that could lead to their account than others.

Nah, not with lab ray topic. There are so many and not everyone posts everyday and with multiple accounts, there's just way too much work.

Just stay within the general grounds of not posting pet names/usernames and the like, and you'll be fine :)

just dont immediately post the result of the lab-ray,how about wait for like 15-20 min/after done your daily, then post it on neocodex. There would be hundred or thousands player out there having the same result from the zap.

if TNT were to track down each one here..they need to hire a group of swat team to track us down

However, the proud boasting of obtain certain rare items from Attic is almost conclusive evidence. Anyone watching for more than a few weeks could develop a profile that together with NP's records provide conclusive proof of some of the biggest parasites on the system. It certainly could be done.

However, generally someone like a Viacom simply gets a cease and desist order, and goes after a sites advertisers. Seen it all before with other games, corporate always wins.

I don't know, how many 8-bit Kougras do you think get zapped on any one day. Also, if you suspect a player of being a parasite, just give them a rigged run of luck, the right zap, or a hidden cove item, then hang him out to dry.

Only if the site in question is breaking the law, of course.

If you ever get anything amazing, like a draik morphing potion or something, then maybe don't post it right away. But even then, i've done that many times and nothing happened :p mwehehe

Or if the site is using a hosting company with no backbone. But yeah, Viacom is far less aggressive than Neopets was on its own. At the end of the day, the burden is on them to get a site shut down and it's much harder today than it was a few years ago.

Even if they can figure out what's your account on Neopets just by checking your lab stats, that's not a good proof that you are cheating, doing that is not against the rules. (Supposing you didn't talk in other threads about your abrosia settings)...

I might have to disagree with that. Just being associated with this site can make you banned. I remember how someone on this site put their caption contest (I think) on here and he got banned within a few hours. He took a risk of course (and it wasn't a noob) but technically they had no proof he was cheating aside from his association with this site. I would say the vast majority of the members on here have never been iced because of leaking information, so just stay sharp.

Actually, they have started the first move to protect their copywrit.

So exactly how much is in the neocodex legal defense fund?

There's a big difference between monitoring their own pages and actively tracking users off-site. Of course, you won't realise that because you're more interested in demonising us.

Eh? TNT could only really send a C&D letter if this site started selling their property for actual money, and that's against the rules here :o This is just a discussion forum! Nothing to send a C&D letter over, and running bots and programs that do things for you isn't enough to send one either. It's kind of like how Nintendo/Game Freak won't do anything to your Pokemon/etc fan project until you start charging money for it and they find out, some Pokemon MMO got taken down iirc because of this~
Besides, there are loads of sites selling nps/items/all that for actual currency and they're still around :p I doubt TNT even cares, ahahah

Their ToS used to say "you agree to pay $50,000 every time you use a cheating program" but that was such a joke, it got removed. Codex doesn't violate their IP in the least bit. Charging for certain things opens us up to more liability than I'd like but that's another discussion.

We've been operating the site for 9 years, and have not heard more than a peep from them. The only issue we have ever encountered with them involved someone we were hosting. If we are violating copyright, we should have received something by now. Many other sites have.

We've also taken steps to protect ourselves in the case of legal litigation. Being prepared does not imply guilt, but is a responsible thing to do in this day and age, since we do sell products and handle personal information.

I think they really only worry about cheating that's obvious enough to the casual observer that it gets reported. Programs just give them more pageviews to report to advertisers--they probably actually like Neocodex.

They do most of their monitoring on the Neoboards, actually. Think about it: What's more dangerous to the company--a few hundred thousand pageviews from bots, or a single "child meets pedo online" scandal? Or, for that matter, a single instance of "asswipe 16-year-old e-mails picture of his junk to some kid he met on Neopets"? Keeping Neopets looking "kid-friendly" is their number-one priority. They have never been, and will never be, worried about cheating that isn't obvious enough to make people complain about unfairness. With most of the unfairness coming from the fact that some people are adults with no life and high-speed Internet, while others are eight-year-olds allowed to play half an hour a day on dial-up, there's really no reason for them to address cheating in any more than a very cursory way. Addressing cheating wouldn't remove the unfairness from the game; it would only cause them to lose those extra pageviews.
