You pay taxes while building your estate and then you die. Should your family have to pay taxes on what you left them?

Tax is never good especially when someone dies and they are taking the money that really should be yours when you are already in a hard situation. Though it is a big source of income to the governmental which is good for the country as long as they don't make stupid decisions with it. Isn't everything taxed these days but I say that we should not tax this.

No I don't think so because whatever you spend that money will be taxed anyway.
I could have that wrong though because I don't really understand the U.S tax system.

Tax is never good-

You are wrong.

To answer the original question, no, I don't believe there should be an estate tax. I do think that the government should stop empowering people to fuck them out of paying the taxes that they truly owe on their income, though, and that it should be a flat percentage across the board. Oh and that people should not be able to get back more than what they paid in.

Estate taxes encourage the wealthy to keep making money rather than just becoming idle. ;)

Tax is never good

You should think that one over a bit.

I had to double check to make sure your username was right. :-P

Flat percentage instead of progressive and no negative contributors...oooooh, I like.

No, they're ridiculous. Let me work my whole life to build an estate and then get it taxed so the government can feed plebeians while I was giving money the whole time.

Brb loopholes/offshore trust funds/wealth in offshore shell corporations for my estate.

Yeah, I never understood how people can get back more than what they put in. I guess there's a certain 'cost of living'... and if you're head of household and have this many kids you can earn up to this amount per child. I dunno. I don't understand this shit. Probably why I'm poor.

How would that work? If everybody made enough money that they were paying in taxes what would otherwise be a liveable income they wouldn't need assistance from government in the first place. :p

I don't even know what you just said

Edit: oh, I got it. I don't mean in assistance, I mean on their federal income tax return. It isnt uncommon for people with massive deductions to get more money back in the form of a tax refund than they actually paid in.

You said that people should not be able to get back more than what they pay in. If somebody earns say $15,000 per year presumably they would be paying very little (if anything) in tax, however, somebody on such a low income would be the person most in need of government assistance. If they went by your logic that person wouldn't be able to receive anything while millionaires would be entitled to thousands of dollars per year. ;)

I don't even understand how that is possible let alone why it would be allowed to happen. :p I've never heard of that happening over here anyway.

I think punk thought the same as me, that you were referring to government assistance. :p

There are certain times where it's ok. I did my sister's taxes this year and she got about $1,000 back. She's a full-time student who also works about 30 hours a week. The only reason she got a refund was because she was low-income and able to write-off student loan interest. While she's getting an income tax refund, she's paying Medicare & Social Security taxes and getting an education that will lead to paying income taxes down the road...those are situations where I don't mind a net refund.

Edit: By refund, I mean she got about $1K back while paying about $500 in income taxes.
