So as most or many of you may have heard, there was an attack at the Boston Marathon yesterday that resulted in deaths and many injuries to many people. And because it was such an awful attack, the internet started to flood with jokes belittling the situation.

In general, I find "Too Soon?" jokes rather funny because I have no class. So from holocaust jokes to tasteless assassination jokes or even natural disaster jokes, I tend to find the humour in them and not get offended. Again, because I have no class.

However, I realize many people are in fact, much more sensitive and respectful to these kinds of things. But the thing is, certain things trigger our "woah, too far/soon" jokes. For my one friend, she will laugh at anything, unless it involves rape. She says there is nothing funny about rape. Abortion, racism, sexism, fine, but not rape.

I used to think there were no boundaries for me, until my one friend made a joke about the death of a friend's father. Not  a hypothetical death if the person were still living like "oh last time I saw him he was in the middle of the road, dead" (no that's not a joke, that's just an example), which my one friend finds SUPER offensive (joking that her still-living family is gonna die), but her father had actually passed away suddenly. From perfectly fine to dead in two weeks (Hanta Virus) and even I thought that that was out of line.

So what about you? Are you sensitive to jokes? Or do you feel they're just jokes? Do you have no boundaries or maybe just a personal one? Bestiality, pedophilia, tentacle porn, mental handicaps, I'm like "meh". But one does NOT joke about the death of a family member!

tl;dr: What type of jokes are always out of line?

Family is too far for me... especially since my dad worked hard to get here.

Well, depends on the joke. Family is kind off limits for me (dad more than mom). Especially family death jokes, my grandpa just died about a month ago, and it was partially because they were in mexico when he fell ill and he cracked his head and got pneumonia (at least thats what i think it was) after. (He had dementia and was trying to use the bathroom, and they were in Mexico. He had to be airlifted back to Dallas). As for the Boston marathon, I feel if jokes are being made (haven't noticed/heard any) ,it's too soon. The explosions were only yesterday, people have died and more have been amputated, an 8 year old is dead, so I would find that kind of joke tasteless.

I really think people use these jokes as a coping mechanism. There's nothing really wrong about it how I see it.

I'm in the hard to offend bracket. I think anything is fair game in terms of jokes. The problem comes when jokes turn in to just direct insults.

I'm fine with everything but dead baby jokes. I'm pro choice,. Pro birth control, etc. but dead babies are too much. The

I don't like sexist woman jokes, but its not crossing a line. Just people being stupid.

I haven't seen any of the marathon jokes yet.  My reaction would most likely be thinking it was "too soon", but I wouldn't be offended.  Mostly because me and mine weren't there.  Might be a completely different story if that were not so. Sadly I will snicker for days over some truly tasteless and/or offensive jokes.

If you know your joke can be hurtful or offensive, you don't have to not say it, IMO. Just don't be a dick if someone does get offended, and legitimately apologize because it is easy to hurt people in ways that aren't opaque. None of that "SORRY YOU'RE OFFENDED BRO" bullshit, either. Just owe up if your potentially shitty joke falls flat and bothers someone.

Personally, I'm not easily offended though I do cast a side-eye toward any joke that hurts the little guy (i.e., oppressed groups). Extreme sexism and any racism is gross.

Yeah, I think I am the same way. I personally can handle jokes well, but people are all different and have their own backgrounds and personal things they deal with. I think that everyone should be more cautious about what they say because you never know what someone has gone through.

Boston Marathon Jokes are way too soon. That's a line that you should not cross.

Just like many of the runners during the explosion.

I think it's a matter of perspective.  If it's a 'joke' that attacks something personal and sensitive and to a lot of people doesn't even look like a joke, then you've gone too far.  If it's an actual joke where you can tell it's a joke, offensive or not I'm fine with it, as long as the person making the jokes can handle jokes being made about them.

Yep, basically this. Me and my friends would call each other silly names that would be vulgar in another context. It's largely dependent on who you speak to.

However, I feel that there should be a limit on racism and homosexual jokes. Like...you know how sometimes, when you're in a playground and little kids call each other 'gay' like a term meant to signify bad things about the other? That kinda implies that we, as a society is ok with that particular term as a insult. Now how would you imagine a homosexual walking by would feel?

It goes a long way by not even using that term at all. This probably goes for racism as well.

    AHEM.

    http://www.reuters.c...E92I02D20130319

Although homosexual people are largely present in our society today, there's still prevalent feelings against homosexuals. Like...kids struggling to express their homosexuality in schools but are afraid due to peer pressure and fear of retaliation? It's not so simple as 'oh i know that i have nothing against them so it's ok', it's more of the fact that the term being used as an insult reflects how flippant our attitude towards homosexuality is.

It's easy for you and me to just laugh it off, but how would a homosexual member of the community feel, when terms like 'gay' is thrown around like a quick poke at others.

It depends on the joke and who's telling it. If you're this kind of person:

Joking about people being killed is OK as long as you're not related...

Generally, I find anything to do with torture, murder and loss of life not funny.

Ehh. I don't care what the joke is about, I laugh if it's funny. A joke is a joke, it's intended for humor, to take it to heart or be offended is just retarded.

And what if it's a joke at a person's expense? It's humorous to some but it's an insult to another.
