They tried expanding into mobile phones with that luntari app thing. It turned out to be a bust, but that may have just been timing, around then smartphones weren't so widespread, and many people weren't willing to buy a new phone just to play a little bit more of neopets.
It was a different generation of mobile interactivity. It's more of a niche thing back then. Nowadays everybody and their mothers have some form of smart device. The mobile app business is huge, especially with the huge number of folks paying literally hundreds of dollars on "special points" to get exclusive items

Not only that, but their coco-roll thing was only for specific phones as well. There was no iOS or Android back then, it was pretty much just BB and Symbian.

I can't imagine trying to navigate the internet on a flip phone again. How spoiled we are. ![]()

Speaking of mobile phones, i'm pretty sure they're considering going down that avenue. Maybe this is old news, but out of curiosity I looked up neopets job openings and found these:
Production Director, Mobile Games
Nickelodeon 13 reviews - Glendale, CA
8-10 years of game production experience, including minimum 2 years of mobile game development. Demonstrated experience and understanding of both premium and ...
QA Lead, Mobile
Nickelodeon Networks Group, Nickelodeon - Glendale, CA
Viacom
So who knows?
Edit: These were both listed in June as well so it's pretty recent!

Yeah, times really have changed. Now the production of smart phones globally exceeds the production of usual phone and eventually usual phones will be phased out. So I think the potential is really there. If they can really find capable people in that area, they could revive the site a bit.

I would love a mobile app for neopets on my phone. Would be even better if they made some of the flash games HTML5 and mobile accessible. Such as whack a kass and ones easily playable on mobile.
