Here, have a teaser trailer first:

Now, go buy the book on Amazon (the picture is a link):
41TpsXKEi8L._BO2,204,203,200_PIsitb-stic

TFiOS is a book about two witty, worldly and weary teenagers who fall in love, share books, do some other stuff. And then things happen. It's young adult fiction, so it's easy to consume and digest, although the subject matter itself it not so much...
Because they have cancer. But it isn't about cancer.
Read it before you see the movie that's coming out soonish, because the movie is going to be a success, and who doesn't like that "I read it first" feeling. Also, it's very good. You will cry.

Here is the full trailer for the film:

Also, there is a girl who inspired the book, although it explicitly is not about her: Esther Grace Earl. She was a teenager who the author met at a Harry Potter convention, who kept her cancer a secret from all her online friends. She died the day after the author's birthday in 2010. You can see him talk about her here:

And you can get the book about her, containing selected journals and miscellaneous musings that she wrote. It also has forewords from John Green (the previously mentioned author) and her parents.
This Star Won't Go Out on Amazon.

I am SO excited for this. I've been a John Green fan and a nerdfighter since 2007, this is such a huge deal! I wish it had been Looking For Alaska that had been picked up first though :/

Looking for Alaska is my favourite book by John. I love rereading it. And I hate rereading it. The middle makes me cry every single time.

It could probably do with a hyphen for clarity, but that's not how the genre is traditionally written, so whatever :p

So you're telling me this isn't some kind of ephebophilistic easy-read version of 50 Shades of Grey?

    I'm afraid so. Sorry, Dan.

I thought that Paper Towns was better. Still excited for the movie though.

Better than TFiOS or better than Alaska?

I love his books! I've read the three mentioned here (TFiOs, Looking for Alaska and Paper Towns). I can't wait for the movie, but it better be good. I don't like for movies to ruin the picture I had in my head from reading the book.

TFiOS is the only John Green book that I have read, sadly.  BUT at least I will get that awesome "I read it first" feeling when I watch it! ^_^

I can not WAIT for the movie.  Even though the actors look nothing like how I pictured the characters to look... but that's always a problem when you read something first.

I knew you'd show up in here, from your sig :p
John was involved heavily with the movie, although only in an unofficial advisory capacity. He seems pretty pleased with the adaptation.

I know what you mean.  I always picture a character a certain way and once I see them in the movie, I can't get that picture back.

@Sweeney Better than TFIOS. I enjoyed Alaska, but I don't know how I'd compare it to PT or TFIOS cause I read it in secondary school and my mindset was far different. I need to reread it but I haven't had the chance to go to the library to find it.

Now that I think about it, I don't really like the actress they chose for Hazel. She's kind of... been ruined for me since The Secret Life of the American Teenager (wasn't a big fan of the show). Y'know how when an actor is in some horrible show and then they try to be in a good movie and you can't take them seriously? Yeah, that's how I'm feeling.

    HOPEFULLY she proves me wrong.

I couldn't be more excited about anything ever. Apart from the Harry Potter series this is my absolute favorite book. I've read every John Greene book multiple times, the stories are really lovely.

Shailene is a very good actress, actually. I was never a fan of Secret Life because of how dramatized it was, however she plays a very good "girl-next-door" "plain jane" type.

Have you seen The Spectacular Now?

She's a main character in that movie and it puts her in a new light. Much more like how she will be in TFiOS.

If you like John Greene books as much as it seems you do, I think you'd really enjoy The Spectacular Now.  :D

I haven't read this... is it supposed to look like her hair is a wig?

She's also playing the lead in the movies for the Divergent series. I think her voice is kinda grating.

TFiOS is the only John Green book I've read. I did enjoy it -- it touched on a lot heavy material for a YA book. I'm really happy that there will finally be a mainstream movie where the main character's story isn't wholly focused on their disability.

No, the character Hazel just has a short pixie cut. I didn't even notice, it's a wig?

    It's obviously a Hilary Clinton wig. :/

I didn't know they were making a Divergent movie. I need to finish that trilogy - it's one of my favourite YA series that I've read recently.

Since other books in the genre are coming up, I'd also recommend the Uglies quartet, by Scott Westerfeld. It's some more dystopian YA that is light and easy. But cool ;)

I heard the rest of the Divergent trilogy SUUUUUUUCKS. But I will probably get to it some day. Dystopian YA is my guilty pleasure. Sometimes I think "That was shit" after I've read it, but I enjoy it very much as I'm reading it.
