It's too bad Putin is going through with all this stuff right now. After the Olympics tourism in Russia (and the $) would have picked up, but not when there is a war brewing. I guess the protests in Ukraine were already going on since before the Olympics though.

It's telling that none of the russian troops has a flag on his uniform. Then they'd have to be accountable. No, this was deliberately planned as an opening salvo of some kind. If they keep the Crimea, I think we'll see cold war -like activity rise in both the east and west, and Ukraine will be partitioned as the new post-WWII Germany.

I applaud Putin for this, he waited until Ukraine was at it's lowest then he struck, tactically he couldn't have picked a better moment. Also he dont give a fuck and knows the US won't do shit, i mean c'mon they gave N.Korea like 3 final warnings... and still didn't do anything. All bark and no bite.
Britain sure as hell ain't getting involved in a war if it does get to it, we barely even have an army at the moment cause the wanker in charge is cutting our numbers down to 83,000 total, 30,000 of them being weekend warriors, despite the top military chiefs constantly telling him not to. Good job cameron you fucktard.

Because being 1 trillion (not an exaggeration) in debt is much better? Are military personnel really that essential.

I agree with this - it was all tactics.
My favourite part? Obama wanting answers as to how and why Russia had the right to invade another country. Then Putin responds, "You mother fuckers pull that shit off all the time!"

Timely read on great power retrenchment.
The more this story lingers, the more desperate Russia seems.

with Germany, France and Canada for comparison
The pound was at 1.667 vs. the dollar last night, and the yen was even, with the Euro at .75. Odd ratios, no?
I think the reserve currency always has largesse, and the smaller countries and currencies either specialize or go the way of Zimbabwe.
Russia's ruble is feeling left out with the Euro doing so well. These war games are all about money, not freeing russians. Well, freeing them from paying taxes under Ukrainian law mebe.
