Depends on your aims. If you want to start breeding for pretty dragons right away, wait until you have a promising mate for them. Otherwise, there's no benefit to not breeding.

Gems are FR's premium currency, and you get one a day for logging in that day, I think.
You can also buy them, of course, plus you get them from some chests.

There are a lot of guides and friendly people on the site forums, unlike Neopets. They've already helped me out with quite a few things.

I've been hanging around the forum for my flight and the people there are especially helpful.
