I came across this one on my mobile phone last night but couldn't copy/paste anything over to Codexx so decided I'd wait until I got home and could use my laptop.
A number of members here are probably too young to remember what it was like to hold the original, but I'm sure at some stage they've held a predecessor (Gameboy Color, Gameboy Advance, Nintendo DS etc)
On 21st April, 1989 Nintendo officially released a small grey brick looking device that started a revolution in terms of hand held gaming. They named the device the 'Gameboy' and it was a hit. Some games that were initially released on the Gameboy and caused the game names to become household names, passed down through generations in newer more updated forms including:
- Tetris (not much more can be done to 'improve' this simple but addictive game, but there's a few that have 'powerups' and the like.
- Pokemon Red and Blue (the initial Pokemon games that are still going strong today. Red and Blue were even remastered for later versions of the Game boy series, called Fire Red and Leaf Green.
- Mario - Originally Super Mario Land, everyone knows Mario
- Zelda
So... happy birthday to 25 years of handheld gaming revolution. There have been other hand held gaming devices, but it seems that Nintendo has really weathered the storm and owned the hand held gaming market over other devices such as Atari, Playstation (which PSP looks like a slimmer version of my hand held Lynx Atari) and any others that have tried. It's most major threat comes from the more portable Mobile phone market now that smart phones are a big thing.
