Family devastated by MH370 disappearance ‘have lost more relatives in Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 tragedy’

Two grandparents are thought to have lost more family members on the flight shot down over Ukraine – just four months after their son and his wife disappeared on another Malaysian Airlines plane.

Irene and George Burrows lost their son Rodney and his wife Mary, who are presumed dead on missing flight MH370 that disappeared over the Indian Ocean in March.

And now they look likely to have to grieve again after reports suggested their step-granddaughter Maree Rizk and her husband Albert were aboard MH17.

Mrs Burrows’ son Greg spoke of the latest tragic blow to hit the Queensland family, telling the Courier Mail: ‘It has been a trying day.

‘This has just blown everyone clear out of the water.’

Flight MH17: Passenger who joked about ‘disappearing’ on Malaysia Airlines flight on Facebook now feared dead

an-image-reported-to-the-last-image-of-m

A Dutch man who joked on Facebook about his Malaysian Airlines flight going missing is now feared dead after the tragic crash over Ukraine.

The passenger, whose name has been withheld, posted a picture of what is thought to have been flight MH17 with the caption: ‘If we disappear, this is what the plane looks like.’

The post was in reference to another Malaysian Airlines flight, MH370, which vanished on March 8th with 239 passengers and crew on board.

But, seven hours after posting the message, news broke that MH17 travelling from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur had been shot down in east Ukraine and, based on the timing of his Facebook update, it is feared he was on board. The heartbreaking comments left on the post read as a timeline of the grief of his family and friends.

‘Happy holidays! I ask of God that no crazy things happen though!’

‘A huge beautiful holiday together and remember… we expect to see nice pictures.’

‘Have a great vacation dude.’

However, the remarks soon take a sinister turn, with family and friends asking if anyone knew his flight number and wondering whether the man and his partner were on board.

‘Please – this cannot be true?!’ posted a friend

Another adds: ‘People have been known to survive these but it doesn’t look good.’

Several RIP messages soon followed.

The plane was full of researchers on their way to an international AIDS conference. Some say up to 100 attendees of the conference were on the flight.

The world of AIDS research was in shock on Friday after dozens of leading HIV experts, including veteran researcher Joep Lange of the Netherlands, were feared killed when a Malaysian plane was shot down over Ukraine, fuelling concerns that research on curing the disease could suffer.

Imagine the potential that was on that plane, now gone because of some asshole who couldn't properly identify a civilian plane. Quite upsetting.

i know. :( as a malaysian, it feels really really horrible. :(

during the incident, singaporean and indian airplane are nearby (around 25km from MH17 i think), but they aren't shot at.

i find them handling the crisis better this time. no more false reporting and whatnot which is good. the MH370 case has matured them a bit on dealing with this sort of scenario.

It's less that and more that they have a branding crisis on their hands now. Even though this was terrorism, it's still going to be in the consumer psyche that Malaysia Airlines had 2 major disasters with huge loss of life within the space of months. "Unsafe" is pretty much the last thing anyone in the aviation industry wants connected to them. They're going to have to alter recent perception to paint the picture that they're a safe, reliable travel option whilst remaining sensitive to the families of hundreds of people have died in 2 incidents. Probably years of work ahead of them...:/

oh, yes. i agree. but it's so unfair... why MAS, why?? :( this incident is not due to mechanical issue of the airplane at all. it's simply about being at the wrong place and at the wrong time. it's such a painful coincidence. 2 tragedies in less than 4 months! damn. the national carrier has been struggling even before the two tragedies took place due to competition with other low-cost regional airlines, so god knows how they will survive this.

Made even worse by the fact that they were flying over there in the first place when American and European airlines have largely decided to avoid the area entirely and route around it... They aren't the only airline to do it but they just happened to be the one to get shot down. :/

Yes, you'd think that if up to 32,000 feet was declared a no-fly zone, that a flight plan at 33,000 feet is probably not a good idea. :/

I wouldn't think it's a particularly good idea to fly over such a hostile area at all when there's known to be very capable anti-air weaponry provided by Russia crossing the border regularly... They're going to be painted as the airline which puts passengers at risk just to save some fuel.

I really hope Russia gets the share of blame that it deserves for all of this though... It's not going to bring any of them back but perhaps it'll help bring an end to it.

    Let the Russians have Ukraine.

    Next problem please.

I get the feeling Malaysian Airlines prices could plummet soon.

Its haunting to see things like that FB post, just to see them thinking about something horrible happening then you just never hear from them again. I found the post and it's nice to see people paying their respects.

It has been advised since this recent conflict started to not fly over the war zone. Sadly, that was ignored and 295 people died. A plane was shot down the day before, for fuck's sake.

And for the record, this has happened before - only this time it was the United States Navy that fucked up:

I wish this was a unique situation, but it's just not and it disgusts me.
