So today there was an Ebola "outbreak" at my local Hopsital.... woke up to emails saying there was an outbreak at UMC hence my complete fear is happening. The person was quarantined and everything but it turned out to not be Ebola. There was also a non-Ebola but panic in Amarillo a couple days ago. I live in Texas and am from Dallas, just currently at school I texted my Mom today because I heard there was an outbreak in my old school district where my mom works. Oh before I forget my friend (who just graduated from UNT last year) is a teacher at the school where the first Ebola outbreak was and was one of her students. So my Mom texted me saying that 2 of her students are the students that were on the news for someone who has Ebola (not sure who she didn't specify) and also a mom of one of her students works at the Hospital.

Basically Ebola is spreading all over DFW, I am pretty much terrified. Granted it is physical contact if it were to spread at an elementary school, where kids pick their noses, cry, poop and pee everywhere, and then they hug each other (because they are kids) and their teachers etc. It's only a matter of time before it starts to really spread.

WHY ARE THEY STILL ALLOWING TRAFFIC TO AFRICA?!?!

I think the symptoms are such bs. The symptoms they list are the same for any damn illness known to man. Makes people get all worried thinking they ebola when all they have is a freaking common cold. They make it sound like you'll catch ebola just by being in the same country as someone with it.

I'm sure it isn't as bad as it sounds, but I'm kinda scared since my best friend lives in DFW ;_; Like right now she's in college and its really fucking far away from DFW and she's staying in the dorms or whatever there, but she goes down there every weekend or so to see her parents >.<

"CDC estimates that from the 1976-1977 season to the 2006-2007 flu season, flu-associated deaths ranged from a low of about 3,000 to a high of about 49,000 people. "

I think, at the end of the day, that as a well developed country this won't be as big of a deal as it has been in Africa.

I haven't looked into this at all, but I think our hospitals here are really well developed.

Also, I'm from Texas. South of Dallas.

Fear is only a weakness, even if somebody had Ebola fear would have no place unless they wanted to be in a state of negativity.  :ohwell: This is all about fear, media creates a lot of unnecessary negativity. Quite possibly there is a simple solution or cure but also people who would pay big $ to keep it hidden in order to make more $ off of fear and hype. I bet that this disease can be cured with herbs/natural remedies (underestimated my many), water therapy, natural food, positivity and sunlight/exercise but medical companies and such tend to hide any cure that they can't get someone to pay for.

First two sentences were right on, but the rest of it borders into a ridiculous conspiracy theory that pharmacies are hiding "cures". This is simply not true. Anyone who has ebola will try everything to get better, and so far there has been no cure-all for ebola.

I understand where your coming from, and by no means do I think pharmacies are hiding cures. I didn't even use the word pharmacy. I was also referring to basic business tactics not conspiracy. Naturally there are always things that are threats to companies which they wouldn't want to become well known. Also media companies usually don't want to miss out on opportunities to make more money, and of course if that opportunity provokes fear in people it will cause negativity which is an observable effect in that type of business.

"Anyone who has ebola will try everything to get better, and so far there has been no cure-all for ebola.  " You would hope anybody who has this tries finding ways to get better, but people face the limits of their own knowledge in what steps they can take to rid disease. Thankfully other people can provide input but even so we live in a time where many ill people make the most simple of mistakes while hoping to get better. Like drinking Coke or smoking cigarettes while fighting a disease. It does sound like their might be no cure as far as me, you or possibly anybodies knowledge can truly determine at the present moment. But that does not guarantee that their is no cure. Remember, science can be very complicated and it would take forever to run out of methods to experiment with so nobody has yet literally tried "everything".  :ninja:

1.) We haven't cut off travel to/from Africa because that would make the whole thing worse. The only way to contain an outbreak is to get people to go to a hospital when they realize they're sick, and making people freak out like that is a great way to get them not to go to the hospital. Besides that, what the affected areas really need right now is manpower. It's to the point where they've said "We would rather have more skilled hands to help than monetary donations." Cutting them off is a sure way to fuck everything up.

2.) You stop freaking out too. Unless you're swapping spit with strangers or getting pissed or bled on, you are safe from ebola. Seriously. It does not spread easily, and it's not environment-stable, so it dies soon after leaving the body. You're not gonna get it from a doorknob.

3.) Don't get me started with the natural cure bit. Just no.

Well you made it clear that you have strongly rejected a very simple idea. Have you studied the thousands of medicinal plants or all the variables to actually logically reject that idea though? By the way yes of course I can be wrong about my guess, and no offense to you pal.

Unless or until Ebola becomes airborne it's never going to be as massive a problem as it's being made out to be because it's actually pretty difficult to catch it in the first place. Last I heard it had an r0 of like 2 (since you need to come into contact with the body fluids of somebody infected) which isn't hugely contagious at all and that's in countries with relatively poor healthcare systems, in more developed countries they're likely to be better prepared and resourced so people will be isolated much more quickly and the r0 will drop a lot. So yeah, for most of us Ebola is just a nonsensical panic and will likely remain that way.

Now various flavours of flu, those are things to worry about if our history with them is anything to go by...

Some people were panicking in my advertising class because someone was being transferred close to their home in Maryland. Sigh.

    I'm not worried.

We had some possible cases this week in my state too, but it turned out to be the flu. I mean I get wanting to stay safe, but likely you're just sick with a cold and not actually having ebola since it's hard to get unless you're practically making out with someone who has it.

I think most people are freaking out over nothing and it'll be nothing like what is being experienced in the other countries.

I think it's sad that people are in such a panic that they start to believe the flu is a "possible case of Ebola." The media needs to stop scaring people.
