"Scientists will be watching for the existence of mini black-holes when the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) particle accelerator becomes fully operational this spring, because the detection of those black holes could change what we know about how gravity works, according to a new physics paper. [...] While scientists have looked for mini black holes before at the LHC, located near Geneva, Switzerland, they haven’t been able to find them. Faizal suggests in the paper that may be because they didn’t take into account the theory of rainbow gravity. According to his calculations, it could be possible to detect those black holes when the LHC starts up again, now firing subatomic particles together at almost double the energy level it did before. [...] Part of the reason mini black holes weren't detected previously is due to the fact that the massive amount of energy thought to be required to create them is larger than anything the LHC could produce, said Faizal."

So let me get this straight. Scientists from all over the world have warned of the potential dangers of the possibility of the large hadron collider creating black holes and destroying the world. Now they're TRYING to create them?

Been great knowing you all!

I hate this. I hate this. I hate this.

idgaf what this machine is meant to help us with. It's an abomination (I sound like one of those old cooks w/e). This machine makes me feel uncomfortable and it should be destroyed. The End.

DO NOT CREATE BLACK HOLES. DO NOT TRY TO RECREATE THE BEGINNING OF THE UNIVERSE. YOU MORONS. ~_~

Particle Accelerator... Call me stupid, but I didn't even know that existed for real O.O

Fiction or not, after seeing that particle accelerator exploding on The Flash, I'm not too keen on this news either.

Lol, if only. That would be awesome.

I read the entire article now, they state that the mini black-holes would be extremely tiny though. So not dangerous.

I'm all for the advancement of science. I trust they know what they are doing and wont destroy the earth.

I don't completely trust them. But I'm not exactly quivering like my OP may suggest. But just because we CAN do something, doesn't always mean we should. This is starting to get dangerous. Not sure I like where it's going.

"Stephen Hawking says the ‘God Particle’ that scientists believe created the world could actually end it, too.

The particle – know as Higgs boson – “has the worrisome feature” that it could become unstable at extremely high energies and create a “black hole” that would collapse the universe, the legendary British physicist has warned in a new book titled Starmus, according to the Daily Express.

“This could happen at any time and we wouldn’t see it coming,” Hawking claimed in the book. "

Maybe, JUST MAYBE this will help us find the meaning of the universe. So, this will help us. A lot.

“A particle accelerator that reaches 100bn GeV [the required giga-electron-volts] would be larger than Earth, and is unlikely to be funded in the present economic climate,” Hawking added, according to the report.

It's hardly dangerous at all. Man up.

Other physicists note that it’s highly unlikely the described scenario would ever occur, but Hawking disagrees. “It places important constraints on the evolution of the universe.”

I mean, personally - I think if it was going to create a world-ending black hole it would have happened already. But with ever increasing power, you never know what can happen. It's called "theoretical" physics for a reason, lol.

I'm familiar with the definition of theoretical physics; I'm trying to make the point that this (huge, apocalyptic physics experiments) isn't going to happen in your (or my own) lifetime... if that makes you feel any better?

Lol, and my point is that there's always that chance that something unexpected happens and we either end up with a super hero or the end of the world. I mean, just look at the comics. According to DC's president the DC universe is "steeped in realism." I think that's more than enough proof  ;)

Joking aside - the people who engage in theoretical physics are far smarter than I ever will be. But you really can't know the outcome of any experiment without trying. So they are embarking on a project with a certain amount of risk. Small, yes, but it's still there.

Also - my dry humor sometimes doesn't shine through in a text medium. But the title of the thread is meant to be a little bit of a joke too.

Edit: also I found this. Which is a pretty good read for those of you who are ACTUALLY frightened - https://medium.com/s...le-886d9e600c28

"These black holes, if they exist, would have been bombarding Earth (and allthe planets) for the entire history of our Solar System, as well as the Sun, and there is absolutely no evidence that any body in our Solar System ever became a black hole or got eaten by one."
