try vb to start. but I'd move to C++ quick, because vb's going to die.

Sharingan what makes you think VB's going to die?

I agree that anyone that feels comfortable programming in C++ should do so, but for small apps VB is fine

VB will be around for years to come (they can't remove the COM layer, too many apps rely on it) - if you like VB you may want to program in .NET but that requires the framework to be installed (no on most computer nowadays)

and another thing they have not replaced the VBA engine in office yet so as long as that exists VB6 will still be used by companies that like to integrate office applications.

I meant as far as doing anything memorable. VB just doesn't cut it in anything big. I'm just starting learning C++

For easy stuff, I suggest VB6 for a while, but if you are going to be a professional programmer learn C++, Java, C#, or VB.NET if you like VB...

if you want to become a professioinal programmer you'll most likely need to know Java as that's the 'in' language at the moment, but in most coding shops I know it's not I'mportant what languages you program in (anyone can pick up a new language), it's HOW you program

being able to write clear, effiecient and easy to maintain code is very I'mportant.

It depends on what type of application, and software you want to build. If it's a si'mple neopet program, then VB6, but if it is somthing like an operating system C++ is MUCH better.

They all are equal in different ways.

I personally do not like Java. bleh. I would use C++ or something of that nature instead.

Hmph! I curse the day I learned VB. I have had a hard ti'me learning C++ because:

1.) String functions and etceteras are too hard  Even getting a string inside a string is hard (a string is made up of arrays of characters in C++)
2.) Making your own data types is hard... (I only knew of 3  )
3.) Making interface is hard ^_^
4.) Using API is hard :p

But a PRO!!:

1.) You can see the source of others because of the GNU Public License :p
