Online Relationships

EDIT:
Decided to edit this post, because I actually had to say something on topic, I just forgot about it, because phonesex made me laugh.
So, I don't get why anybody puts so much weight on that sex thing. I mean, sure I don't blabla get over it. It's just, Sweenymh are not going to have an online relationship forever you know? They just have to sort some things out, before they will move together. Things like that need time. Time they have to be apart from each other. But it's only a matter of time, that they will live together and shag the hell out of each other on their brand new kitchentable, right? So where's the problem?

Again, this topic isn't meant to be about Sweenyhm.

Its sort of progressed to Sweenymh's sex life. And whilst we love these two mods dearly, we definitely don't love them enough to want to visualise or discuss them going at it.

A fuckbuddy is, or at least can be, a kind of relationship.
You've never heard anyone say "but I stay with them 'cause the sex is amazing"? Or similar?
Not really but then again I'm in college. Most people just have fuckbuddies if they want sex. Relationships come and go, no one's looking to get married right away or anything unless they're super religious.
But I understand what you're saying because I just saw this picture on Tumblr

I would never be able to hold a relationship over the internet. I have to have real, physical contact and put in actual situations that would happen in real life to get to know them. Sitting between two screens and chatting hardly lets me know anything about them. Going out to the movies, going shopping, ect. does.

Whole board: TL;DR except for the first post and the ones about sex

Sitting in a dark room full of strangers, all watching one giant screen, and not interacting at all tells you more about a person than talking to them?
You're weird.

For those of you that have based your argument around the need for physical contact, that's more than likely what is more important for you in a relationship than it is for others.
Sweenyhm, fuck what anyone says. You two are happy together, and that's all that matters. Congratulations on finding someone that you intend to spend the rest of your life with. You should have two weddings, one in 'Murica and one in England so that most of us will be able to attend.

We are doing exactly that
But on topic:
I know more about several of my friends from this website than I do about most of the people that I consider my friends IRL. We talk more often than I do with anyone I know in real life. Some of you, I talk to every day. For comparison, I am going out to dinner with my best IRL friend on Monday, and it will be the first time I've seen or spoken to her in over a month. Before that, we didn't speak for over a year. The other three people who I consider the best of my IRL friends, I only talk to a couple times a year at best.
I was going to bring up the cinema thing earlier, so I am glad that someone did. My IRL friends might consider sitting side-by-side watching a movie together as quality time, but to spend time with my online friends, I must interact with and communicate with them. Couples who live together can settle into routines of spending evenings in front of the TV or in separate rooms working or relaxing, but online couples have to actually talk to one another if they want to spend time together.
I agree with destruct. I am not entirely convinced that a permanent long-distance relationship could never work. I think that as our world continues to get more interconnected, we will start to see a rise in the number of lasting, romantic relationships between people who never meet in person. Obviously it is not what most of us would want, but it might be perfect for some people. In essence, it all comes down to the individuals involved, and what they want and need out of the relationship.

It tells me how much they enjoy star wars. If they don't fall in love with Obi-wan and Han then they are an awful human being.

Starting an online relationship is not bad. But keeping it purely online is. The level of phisical intimacy online is Zero.
Agreed. I personally have nothing against online relationships, but I don't plan on getting involved in any. I even stay away from making friends with people online. ;___;
Well basically, I don't really care about what other people do online because it doesn't involve me. (Yay, I sound selfish)

Especially if they have their face painted like Darth Maul. Then you know you hit the jackpot.

The only downside would be keeping it online. My friend met a guy from work who plays WoW and met his online girlfriend there. They even had a fake online wedding which weirded me out slightly but hey, who am I to judge? They've never met or have any definite plans to.. I just couldn't go that long without physical intimacy.
My only qualms would be - if they're honest about who they are how do you know? I could say I was an astronaut transvestite who loved monkey burgers online and might actually get a few people to believe me

How do you know the guy you met in the bar last night is really who he says he is? Maybe it's drug money that he's spending on those fancy meals, not the stock profits that he says they are. Maybe that fancy necklace is stolen, not a family heirloom.
Relationships are built on trust. Offline as well as online.

If you are investing any amount of time into getting to know this person, then you will learn whether they are telling you the truth or not (online or offline). As long as you're not completely blinded by love/lust/stupidity/naivete, you'll start to see when things don't add up and/or they have a hard time explaining certain things. People can't keep up lies forever.

These are my suspicions and internal fears about Neocodex user Random.

It's generally considered a better course of action than posting shit in the middle of a debate topic.
(And for the record, I don't find being called a lady even remotely insulting...)
My bad, I thought you were the girl on your pic. I didn't do it on purpose.
Well, sex isn't exactly everything and shouldn't be the main point of a relationship :0
Also sex can come once the two people see each other irl, since obviously they would be flirting and all before meeting up~
Sex isn't everything but is something big in a relationship. Meaningless sex is kinda stupid, but when you "love" someone, it's something cool.
Btw, I thought the OP was talking about online relationships, without meetings irl.

Heh, no, that's me. He's the silly guy flailing around with his tongue hanging out in his signature.
