TOKYO (Reuters) - A Japanese boy burned down his home, killing his stepmother and two younger siblings, for fear his parents would find out he had lied about his score on an English test.

The 16-year-old, whose name has not been released, is thought to have set fire to the house in Nara, western Japan, and left his stepmother to die along with his 7-year-old brother and 5-year-old sister, domestic media reports said on Saturday.

The boy's parents had been due to attend a meeting with teachers about his exam results that same day, reports said. The teen-ager told police his father, a doctor, had put him under extreme pressure over his academic performance, Kyodo news agency said.

While I do not symphatize with the child for what he has done, I feel for the general population of Japan. Testing over there is a big deal and to see this sort of thing happen as a result saddens me. Stress causes us to do crazy things. But who knows, who is to say his parents would not have killed him over the grade? Nah, I'm not justifying this at all. It is deeply wrong.

The Japanese love perfection. I have a Japanese friend (A junior) who got grounded for getting a B+ in AP Latin. I believe it's his first B in high school.

They take educational grades very seriously -- not just Japan, but their whole asian culture. Grades don't even matter that much, so it's sad to see suicides and arson over it.

Sadly, the pressure put upon Japanese students to excel in thier studies can cause the children, especially in thier teenage years, to do strange and interesting (albiet on a morbid level) things.

I happen to be going down some odd lines of thought with this. While it was not justified that the student burn down his house, leaving his family inside, I must wonder if possibly the arson would have been less of a loss than the boy would have incurred had his parents found out above his below par grade. Depending on the parental units involved, it very well may have been a case of his life, or thiers (sadly enough) and he may have made the choice based on the human desire for self preservation and instinct to survive. Or possibly his family would not have been so very harsh upon him, but he simply feared for the worse?

So many paths of thought that could be taken... Quite a few of them dark and disturbing. O_o

Compare the American education system with that of Japan's and Japan wins without a doubt.

    But at what cost?

The sadder thing is that his 5 and 7 year old siblings died in the blaze.

I'm Asian but I wouldn't ever take it that far. I try to keep what I want balanced (sports, games, etc) with good grades.

Compare the US education with pretty much all of Asia and Europe, they would own us no doubt.

    Exactly...
That's what eliminates any chance of leniancy. If he only did something to his parents, then people could say, "Oh yeah... The parents may have done something horrid to him.", but since the boy killed his siblings as well... burned them alive... Then... He deserves no leniancy... Nothing... To kill to innocent children... Burned alive, the pain they went through, just because of his grades? Let him rot in hell...

This seriously makes me wonder what goes through this kids head.

Which would your parents be more pissed about? Burning the house down? Or getting a bad grade?

Wow O_o Over a test result?

I'm Asian. My parents are strict and always get upset if I'm not the best - so I don't like showing them my grades.
Sometimes I'm glad my Mum doesn't understand the grading system, lol..

I wouldn't do that, but I do stress incredibly over my grades. A bunch of idiots in my school do shitty because they say "Life sucks in the ghetto, I don't have time to study since I have to watch out for my family" and stuff like that.

While my dad was still living in the same house as me he was extremely strict about my grades. Even a B+ would piss him off.

Ever since then, if I get below an A- in a class I freak even though he is gone. A- is bad too. I ended up getting 2 of them on my final grades. Crappy 4.03 GPA :(
My close and intelligent friend Alex got a 4.57. He took a lot of honors classes.
