I've learned over the 6 years I've used the Internet that being active on a forum without using common shorthand in posts suggests that people eventually believe that you are either too professional to be friends with people of the same age range (them), or are a 50 year old English professor.

Taking a look at people's signatures, it seems most friendships have been forged over "omg i <3 u cara" and similar conversations between members on messaging programs. The usual faux-love online conversations that people use to break the ice, get to know each other and to generate comradery, seem to be prevalent on this forum.

The way I see it, I can be professional, use proper grammar, make no real friends and possibly be considered for a Moderator position by the end of the year.

Or I can use AIM shorthand, make a ton of friends, have an MSN list full of interesting people, yet never gain any decent status on this forum due to not being taken seriously.

If I were to forego this step entirely, would I ever make friends?

Does the fact that I used a word like "comradery" automatically remove me from the Cool list?

or would i have to type liek this to be friends wit u guys??? i mean srsly id consider it if it works k? thx

EDIT- Removed bold tags for clearer reading.

Agreed, I used to Capitalize each word I posted. But now I've gotten used to typing normal like this. It is nice to have people learning to type properly.

Yes, bad grammar is very annoying to me. I love to read a sentence written correctly. It gives me a considerable warm feeling inside. But to answer your question, I think it is a great thing to have decent grammar.

*chuckles* I have never used shorthand and personally I hate it and I'd say that I have a fairly large MSN list. Meh, shorthand is for the people who don't wish their posts to be actually read I assume since... I don't read them happy.gif If anyone posts in shorthand it immediately gets ignored since I frankly don't feel like interpreting what they said since if they can't be bothered to type in non-broken english that can be read easily without effort it must not be that important *shrugs*

    Go you thumbsup.gif

Yes, the title does contain a grammatical error.

I thought it would be interesting to use it as an oxymoron of sorts.

Seeing as how it wasn't too obvious, I guess I failed.

You included! tongue.gif tongue.gif *presses the tease button*

Actually, I love it when people type nicely. I always take more kindly to them from first impressions than I do from people who type short hand.

Although, I do despise it when people who do type perfectly start ragging at the short hand writers as though they were stupid and uneducated. People type shortly, because.. it's shorter tongue.gif

But there is a difference between

    oMg U r WeLl HoT
    and
omg i think u are well hot

(the first one being most annoying, and the second being acceptable) tongue.gif

How Did You Capatalize Each Word That Must Have Been So Hard To Do And Must Have Taken You Much More Time. I Am Glad You Stopped As That Could Have Gotten Really Annoying.

I think that good grammar in the cyber world is just as important as it is in the real world. Say you are chatting online with a potential business partner:

You: So what do you want to give me for product X?
Them: I'll give you a billion dollars?
You: Really!! omgwtfbbq~ ^y^ smile.gif XD rofl ty ty ty ty ty ty ty ty ty biggrin.gif:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D
    Them: On second thought, no.

I personally think it's great you do not slip into the txt spk or the 1337 talk that is so common in this world of electrons.

you may find that what you say is taken seriously, but the beauty of this is that if you want to be fun or throwaway you can - it's a lot easier to add a few !!!'s to your comment, or maybe even a LOL/ROFL/Smilie type thing, and because you don't always use them they will have a greater impact.

I for one am always using lols but usually because i'm always happy and when i find something funny i like to say so.

    keep up the good work!

Dude.. Legendria.. I type pretty well, dont you think? I've also made a pretty good amount of friends on this forum. And I'm friends with you.

    Btw, omg i <3 u legendria111!!!

And yeah, typing has gone down hill.. I hate when I go to technical support online, for some products, and its like the live support thing. The people have horrible grammar...

    Them: hi
Me: Hello, I've been having this problem with my hardware.
    Them: sec
Them: k, do u have your id #?
    Me: DIE BIATCH!

    @Kitsune: I think hes around 17 or 16, I cant really remember.

I personally prefer if a person could type correctly. It does influence what I think of them. Just because you use correct grammer and punctuation doesn't mean you won't make any friends.

I'd rather have everyone type regularly. I know I mispell a word every once in a while, but "tlking lyk dis" is just stupid.

I used to use chatspeak or 1337 talk or whatever you want to call it. Even though it looks harder I believe it easier to use the normal good grammar way. happy.gif Only because if you get the hang of doing this then you can get used to it and then it is easier to type pages for school or whatever it is you need.

    Hit me up on MSN.

I used to do the whole chatspeak thing because at first I couldn't actually type that quickly when everything was longhand, someone I met hated it though, so I started writing correctly for them and then it just stuck as habit. As it stands I can't really spell, my grammar is bad and I have a sordid love affair going on with the use of multiple commas, eh well.

I do still use it when I text though, depending on the person, that's just because I'm the slowest texter in the world though tongue.gif.

Anywho, I'd say overall this forum is very good at using full words and not very big on the abbreviation side of things, so you've got no worries happy.gif.

No worries...lacking poor grammar will not push people away from you, quite the contrary.
