Msn, or more accuratly Windows Live now is probably the best(after you get that crack on it ), but I prefer AIM because:
1. Everyone I know has it, and
2. I just love the GUI xD

MSN Messenger has a pretty good interface, and that's what I voted for. But, I use both AIM and MSN because most of my friends use AIM. If all of my buddies switched to MSN, I would have no reason to stick with AIM.

MSN. Looks nice, great functionality, a lot of people have it, lot of features. Also, if you meansured AIM IM or Yahoo IM in Australia, most people wouldn't know what you are on about. Nobody uses them in Aus.

Yeah, it's funny how AIM is such a big school friend network thing in America only -- elsewhere nobody will have heard of anything except MSN.
Windows Live for me (with the Plus+ add-on):
-School friends use it
-I like the script modding thing
-Logs in quicker than AIM for me
-Nice interface
-Log viewer (Plus+ feature) is really useful
-Multiple chat windows embedded into one for organization (I don't like the one on AIM)
The only benefit AIM holds for me is that I have a couple of Neofriends who use it, but i'm not going to use it just to talk to two people. As for Yahoo, i've never even touched it.

MSN, for one reason only; it's the most used instant messenger. Why would I use Yahoo or AIM when everyone else is using MSN; I would have a very limited number of contacts.

MSN is way better.
The majority of people use it. AIM or Yahoo, not sure which, they allow contacts to see if you're online even if they're not on your list.

AIM, apparently no canadians have AIM, and at my school, everyone has AIM.
here are some other important reasons:
AIM has a somewhat professional, non-resource hog interface, I can open it up and IM immediately, where as with MSN / WLM, I have to wait a while for all the shit to load and then be able to scroll down, if you ever look at the CPU / RAM usage of both IM's, you will see AIM (im using 5.9) is much lower.
Reason I dont pick YIM which is more similar to AIM than MSN IMO, is because its bundled with too many spyware-type things. They always want you to install the "yahoo this, yahoo toolbar, yahoo free smilies", etc and again, limited amounts of people use YIM

I like msn because the interface is usable....plus I have the most friends on it. I had aim and yahoo, but almost no friends on there. The only thing I used 'em for was radio. xD
