Yes, I'm too generous for my own good.

I give what I can. It sucks to be homeless, and they probably don't deserve it. So I give about 100$ every month to a foundation.

I do not encourage homeless people to beg. In my town certainly it is very easy for them to find somewhere to live, get a job and actually make something of themselves if they are actually homeless. Also the vast majority of the people that beg in Blackpool aren't even homeless, they just pose.

I'm aware some people are thrown into terrible situations, but there are homeless shelters in Blackpool and absolutely tonnes of job opportunities that won't need many qualifications at all (granted seasonal, but beggers can't be choosers and all that). Maybe if people stop giving them free money for nothing they'll get off their arses and do something, they get benefits thrown at them anyways if they just sort it out, my dad's mate is living proof of that, he has a house and a family and he doesn't work and she works at a Stationary Box, it's the benefits that keep them where they are, so it could certainly help others out too.

I saw a dude rummaging for pop cans in the dumpster of my parking lot today...I'm not sure how that should make me feel. Should I feel good that he's kinda sorta working...or shoulda I feel bad that he's most likely taking them in to get change for alcohol?

IMO good that he's sorta working tongue.gif it's his own choice what he does with it, people with a house and a job will still bloe most of their money on booze if they want, homeless people should be allowed to do it with their own earned money...

The reason it caused my a connundrum was that I very nearly ran up to him and offered him a few bucks, without him even asking me...unfortunately, by the time I'd pulled into the garage, he was out of site...but without knowing his intensions, I don't know if I should've given him something...him not begging tells me even more that he deserved it.

I always donate my old clothes, but as for money, I only give it to those who I know will use it on a necessity. In Oxford, it isn't too hard to know whether they are for real or a fake.

I voted for the first option because I am part of a charity group that attempts to raise 1 milliion dollars every year for the homeless people of the Bay State Area, and we have not yet been able to reach 1 million but the highest we got was 672,000 dollars, which is very good.

I voted the second one. If they ask for food and I have food I'll give it to them. I remember one time I was little-10-12?, I got off the ttc bus(transit bus) and some guy was begging the people who got off for food. There were a bunch of highschoolers who got off with me and some of them laughed at him and said "get a job". I had an apple I didnt eat that day in my bag but I was too scared to give it to him in the sense that some of the hs kids were making fun of him and they'd look at me wierd or w.e. I've felt really bad when I got home.

I'll give em food cuz I know the feeling of being really hungry. So has everyone I think...you know forgetting lunch money for school or something. And you feel like shit. So ye...I got a soft spot. I hate seeing people suffer.

When I have food on me, I'll usually give it to homeless, and if I have spare change, then sure.. regardless of how they'll spend it.

'Cause, think about it... you're homeless... what else will you buy instead of booze or drugs.. of course food, but I'm sure you'd buy other stuff too, eh.

If I walk past a homeless person and I have silver, I generally give it to him/her. If they ask for it, however I don't.

yeah i normally do, regardless for what they spend it on..at least you're helping them out. and, it's not as easy to get a job if you're homeless. jobs require an address (yeah, even mcdonalds) and shelters are not always willing to provide one for everyone.

a terrible thing i observed on the subways a day or two ago:

a guy was walking down the aisle sticking a piece of paper in people's faces asking for money. one black woman gives him a hand full of change. he is apparently not satisfied, and throws the change in her face. it ended up becoming a big mess, and she called her boyfriend and he ended up coming and starting trouble with the guy...the rest is not important. i find it ridiculous that people have the nerve to do something like that. of course this guy seemed to have some psychological problems..but gives you the basic idea of how NYC homeless people treat others.

What the $*#!? blink.gif If I were in his situation, I would be glad to accept any amount of change. Why did he throw it back at her? I've seen this a few times before, and I still don't understand why they do it. dry.gif

Most people don't realize that the majority of homelessw people don't like the living conditions that they have to live through at a shelter. Thats why many steal tvs and other stuff they are able to pawn off to stay in a hotel for a night or so.

What would make more sense is if we made the shelter a little better for them to be able to live in so they wouldn't go out and beg all the time.

Theres rules to begging. Saw them a while ago. However, I don't believe that most homeless people have good intentions in mind with your money. If they did have good intentions they wouldn't be on the street. And theres no way in hell anyone can argue that. It's their own choice weather to get a job or not.

In Sweden we have an organisation which provides homeless with an oppurtunity to earn money themselves by selling a magazine. Those who sell the magazine have agreed to stay clean (stay away from alcohol and/or drugs), and they go to regular check-ups to make sure they stay that way.

Whenever I see one of them I usually end up buying - or at least paying for - the magazine (no use in collecting them, eh?).

I voted no... I don't exactly have money to give them, since I'm not much higher on the ecomonic scale than they are xD

We have a few well known tramps in my city that have been around since I was little.
We took one of them to the pub the other week and bought him lunch. He was a really nice guy.

Yes you should. Not everyone has the opportunity to go get a good job. Unless the guy's smoking/drinking or high I'll give him/her my spare change.

---
Lol yes Hobo everyone DOES have an opportunity to get a good job. He should use the money he gets to hmm maybe go down to ross or marshall's and get a decent outfit, then go to the ymca and shower. I think that everyone can get a job. Even if its at McDonalds. I mean that's how they get started. My Dad used to be a hobo now he works for microsoft and we have a nice house that costs 700k+ and are moving into 1.2 Million dollar house next August.
---
Anyways my point is that anyone can stop their addictions and clean up their act a little.

No, not everyone can get a decent job, but there are people well in their 30s that work at McDonalds and share the apartment with a roomate or two to pay for the rent. That's the great thing about good countries. Even if you're in the slums financially, everything WILL be OK.

But that's not a reason not to give to the homeless. Any money to help get them out of serious debt will help them at least towards a 400$ a month apartment in a beat down town, though many do need to stop abusing so there should be some regulation.

That would require tax raises and I know that no President/Mayor is going to get elected promising increased taxes for the Hobos. Or they'd have to be happy with an 8/6 figure income (respectively) but I doubt that's happening tongue.gif
