So both of my friends came over the other day. And one had to run home really fast, so my friend immediately starts talking to me. He told me he wants to go to california soon. Right now hes a junior in high school. He actually wants to take a bus/or we can drive there, and live there a few years. He says he wants to pursue his music career and get lucky. Hes only 16 right now so am I. We both dont have our liscences yet.. I'm getting mine in december though.

Basically he asked me to go with him. At first I thought he was just kidding so I kind of laughed then I realized he was very serious, and he really wanted to do this. He said we can work out the details later, about finding apartments and such. But he wanted me to think about it.

Now a few things I have to think about. My life is going nowhere fast. I asked my mom if I could do this and she said she could care less, and maybe if I left to go on my own I could learn something. I currently dont go to school since I got expelled and dont plan on going back to school till december when I get my license. I have nothing to lose really. And I could probably get a job soon and start saving up.

His parents wouldn't be very easy to convince, their very uh... whats the word? The kind of parents who watch their kids too much. They actually burned his skateboards when they caught him without a helmet. Anyway this sounds pretty exciting to me. And no this kid isnt some no talent, wannabe. He is extremely good, I have known him for almost 2 years and we've been best friends almost 2 years now. He is extremely amazing. If I can find his old band's myspace, I'll post it and you can listen to some of his music.

But anyway he plays electric/aucostic guitar and can play just about any kind of music. He loves Hendrix though and he can pull the solo's off amazingly similiar and can replicate his style nicely. He can also play pretty good metal as well. But hes mainly good at soloing. Also the thing that amazes me the most is that he can play with this teeth.. yes his teeth. I didn't believe him at first but then pulled of a hendrix solo with his teeth and I was kind of "WTF..."

Anyway I wanted to know all of your oppinions on this. I havent talked to him much about it lately. But he keeps bugging me about it, so I know hes serious.

Thoughts?

It doesn't matter. It's not about what you know, it's about who you know. This is very risky, I would tell your friend and you to get your GED and try to go to a community college.

Yeah see, I dont really care if its risky. I really don't have anything to lose. I guess he does though.

But Justin, you do have something to lose, money, and your chance at going back to school.

You're only 16, still a kid, stay in school or you'll regret it later...

You have plenty of time to go exploring after you've finished your education. thumbsup.gif

Don't be pushed into it by his nagging, or because you don't want to let him down. If that's a factor in why you want to go, forget it. Only go if your heart is really set on it.

Thing I don't understand is WHY you would go. Your friend is pursuing a potential music career, but what do you hope to achieve? A job? I'd stay at school, get some qualifications and get a better job afterwards.

The idea of living in Cali (are non-Americans allowed to say that? tongue.gif) alone with your best friend seems nice at first thought, but consider homesickness and other issues. At 16, it's not going to be easy living away from your parents.

Homesickness? I dont give a crap about anyone/anything here tbh. And yeah, I dont wanna stay here anymore, I want a change.

If your mum helps you fork put the rent, I guess you should just go for it. Your heart seems set on going, so there's no point trying to dissuade you. tongue.gif

If I were in your shoes, I wouln't go. School is a very critical factor in your future, though a few can pull success w/o it. Don't mess up your chances, I know the feeling of wrecking your future and it isn't nice (I did something bad T_T)

But the thought seems nice though. When I left home to study around a thousand miles from it( as I can remember). I was very homesick and wanted to go back. You'll only appreciate what you have now once you leave it.

I still don't see the point in compromising your whole future just because you aren't completely happy at the moment... unsure.gif

I'd wait until you finished high school, honestly. You're going to go nowhere fast if you don't have a high school diploma, or at the very least, a GED.

It'll be more expensive to go to school, so money isnt an issue. I have to actually go to a private school in december, and its expensive as hell.

Why do you think its called getting lucky? Besides he the only one who needs to worry about that. I'm just looking for a fresh start with someone to back me up.

sorry if I offended you in some way.
But im just saying that the risk is far too high. time passes by much faster than you may think, and a good education can be a really good backup incase you guys dont get lucky

at least take the GED test, if u can get a GED gold you can get full paid tuition scholarships to certain colleges so at least you can continue on if you don't "get lucky". you wouldnt want to (or at least personally) being in your mid 20s starting 11th grade tongue.gif

No offense to your friend, but an out of work musician is probably the least reliable person to be "backing you up". An expelled 16 year old would have trouble finding a full time job which you would need in order to not starve to death.

If you both can get full time jobs down there, find a cheap place to live and can sort everything out prior to leaving, it COULD work.

I never said he was for helping me pay for anything. I just need the company/a friend. Thats what I meant.
