It would be a ugly matter to award points to all the existing members, but I can certainly see where you are coming from.

I can see that generating alot of spam, much more than we currently get.

I think we just need to find a way to discourage the new members from spamming to get their 5 post requirement rather than finding ways to limit their access to programs.

Agree. Now they only need 5 posts to download ALL they want. If now they would need to post 5 times in order to download a program, they would spam even more to download even more.

Anyway it is still worth experimenting. Just one suggestion though, could we put a min word count for members posting, say like 20 ? I knwo this isnt a lot, but this might deter more spam , and well it could only apply to members less than 50 posts. ninja.gif

GZP did this, it would just cause people to spam or submit ripped/retarded tutorials. And I hate word counts, sometimes you only need a couple words but you can't post because of it so you put 10 smilies and look moronic (Not saying people who use alot are just saying that if you post "Ok I'll do it right now tongue.gif:p:P:P:P:D:D:D:)smile.gifbiggrin.gif" you don't look that sound)

A cool feature would be one that's like the rep system except only Private members (or higher) -rep and it only regular members (Not advanced) can be -repped and once you lose 5 rep you can't use programs anymore o.0

Once again I'm quoting myself, only the cool kids do it. We have a rep system, everyone starts off with lets say 20 rep which allows them access to the programs, if they do something bad another member (Private+) -reps them and if they fall under 15 rep they can't use the programs (5 posts needed = 5 spam posts = -5 rep = no programs until you earn the rep back)

hmm true..

Anyway for the rep system, if i dint remember wrongly, there was a time when neocodex had this mod. But it was removed, as some people abused it.

I like the idea about points, but the Rep idea is SO much better... No offense, Kitsune! 15 rep = allowed to use programs... perfect.

Well, I think that using a system that has points that are awarded for activeness and contributions to the site. with contributions having more weight.

The rep system is a great system. As long as we can get the mods to monitor the reps given and remove ones given for bad reasons. The point system...Well it sounds like a great idea and I would really like to see how it goes.

The Mods would be working there ass of though. As SL said, there was like 1k of leechers. Maybe if we can create a special rank to moderate all the -reps and +reps, that would be good.

Not rep for everyone, rep for only regular members and it can only be given/taken away from by Privates +who have no incentive to abuse it unless they're bitter and don't want newbies to use programs tongue.gif

Private has enough power as it is. Why would you give that group even more power?

It'll cause more bad than good, I think. If they have to post to use programs, they'll just spam more than they do now.

I have already solved the solution of how to stop the spam. Just delete all the programs. It wouldn't help with the activity or member number though, but it sure as hell would get rid of the spam.

Being serious though, I like the idea to an extint but their would be more harm than good coming from this, in its current form. It is something that could be built on though to make work for codex. I don't think that any of the tech team want to spend the hours to create a system to handle this though, especially with the idea that its possible that it would just be canceled after a week or so.

I hate the idea of reputation. People could just lower your rep when they didn't like you.

But it would deter many potential members from joining. Yes i agree it would be the best way to stop the spam, but by using the cost-benefit analysis, i dont think the benefits ( stoppage of spams) would outweigh the costs ( deterring of potential members joining and also a lot of members quitting as neocodex is well known as a big board for having neopets programs)

Also, if the rep system were to be implemented, i think the group that should be given power to + or - should be retired and above.

To overcome the problem of spam, there is a simple solution.

Remove the friggin requirement of five posts, and dont even add one. I mean if they wanna use our programs, good for them.

It does not hurt us at all!

I don't agree with the reputation thing. Privates have just had to have a news topic asking them to cool it with new members, I don't think that giving them a chance to go on a -rep riot is really a good idea just yet. Maybe when people are cooled down, but not just now o-o.

Trusting kids with that much power, such as rep, is a big no-no. You guys aren't mature enough to handle it.

Only power Private has is to chose new Privates unless I'm missing something o.0
I hate the idea of reputation. People could just lower your rep when they didn't like you.
But who would go around -repping a bunch of newbies who didn't deserve it?

Personally I don't think there's enough active Retired people. Only like Tetiel o.0
Trusting kids with that much power, such as rep, is a big no-no. You guys aren't mature enough to handle it.
Wasn't the only reason it was remove because people had rep circles and were abusing it And -rep wars? Since only Regular (Non-Advanced) members have rep if they do get -repped odds are they deserve it and they can't counter -rep nor can they +rep each other. So they'd either have to be friends with Private members+ or bribe people which seems kinda unnessacery.

Apparently I can't quote so oh well

Thats why i said , if it was to be implemented, it gotta be the retired ranks and above who could use it since i assumed that they had reached a certain level of maturity and act in the goodwill of codex and not in a moment of anger etc.
