Alright, right now, I have a piece of shit GeForce4 MX 4000. What a piece of crap... It lags in Warcraft 3 even tho I have fuckin 39 ms ping... dry.gif
So, I'm in the market for a new gfx card. I don't want any top of the line crap that's a thousand bucks. I just want something that'd run War3 without a problem. I have a pretty tight budget, so that is a major issue for me.
Right now, I'm down to these two.

-ATI Radeon X1950 PRO
http://compare-price.../items/28038271

-eVGA e-GeForce 7600 GT
http://compare-price.../items/26497886

I know crap about gfx cards. This is what I could find after a bit of googling. Let me know if it's too much for War3, and let me know if you have any suggestions/preferences you'd like to let me know about. These are expensive, imo, and it would be lovely if you could get a better deal for me.

Any help appreciated. happy.gif

2.4Ghz Processor
1.96 GB Ram
160 GB HD
128 MB GeForce4 MX 4000 Vid Card. dry.gif

To be perfectly honest, I wouldn't buy one right now. I am in the market for a new card too, but since I have updated to vista I am waiting for a decent Directx 10 card to come out. (decent price) Even if you are not using Vista, you will eventually, and it would probably be nice to have a card ready for when you swap. All the new games are going to be DirectX ten so why not be prepared? Both of the cards you list are nice cards, but not for the price. I'll see if I can catch fatal on msn and get him to check out this topic for you, as he is probably the most knowledgeable about computer hardware around this site. I am sure he could suggest a few nice, decently priced, cards for you.

Sounds good, and I'm dreading the change to vista. I actually hate it.
I've been on a comp with it and the security system is absolutely ridiculous.
Also, the OS greatly reduces a computers functionality.

Lastly, I have a modified XP. I can already run Vista executables on this, no problem. smile.gif

There are no DX10 cards out yet. o.o
The nVid R600 got pushed back. blink.gif

But yeah, it'd be nice if he could help me out. smile.gif

meh, i probaby wont upgrade to vista and a DX card until december xD not worryed about summer since i wont have my computer in mexico xD

Their is no real point to upgrade right now, infact I tell most of the people who come into work not to right now. Still alot of incompatabilities and bugs that need to be worked out, like any other new OS, but the OS all around is a nice one.

nVidia plans to launch their DX10 mainstreams cards this April. Which means their drivers will be out April, too tongue.gif

I'd wait for that.

I'd listen to Trevor. He is the most knowledgeable on computer components here. At least that is the impression I have.

the 8800Ultra and a few lower cards are already supported in the new vista drivers, so shouldnt be much longer

and also

ATI = R600, not nvidia (to whoever labeled it as nvidia above)

TheINQ is one of the least reliable sources there are, so its never really a website you should ever believe 100% but the cards ARE coming soon, 100% sure on that

Um by those spec's it looks like your comp might only have an AGP slot.. So I would MAKE SURE you have a pci-e slot before you're buying a PCI-E video card since most likely you dont have one unless mabey thats an AMD, so check no matter what.

I agree on waiting, but here are better deals on the cards you posted

ATI X1950Pro PCI-E - 157$ http://www.newegg.co...N82E16814127271
nvidia 7600GT PCI-E - 110$ http://www.newegg.co...N82E16814130062

and the X1950Pro would win by far out of those two

AGP cards are overpriced, and more expensive than PCI-E cards for what you get, but here is the 2nd best AGP card out and 200 or under, and also highly overclockable if you want to overclock

nvidia 7800GS AGP - 200 (180 AR) - http://www.newegg.co...N82E16814130274

Conclusion:

I recommend waiting for new cards/motherboards /possibly DDR3, all around April
Make sure your motherboard supports PCI-E
If you have an Intel, 2.4ghz is slow, so try upgrading your CPU soon since a 2.4ghz Intel would be a large bottleneck (meaning it limits the performance) to any card anyone has posted above

Lol.
That was uncalled for.
Some people (that don't know of the existence of modified XP OS's) enjoy the eye candy Vista has to offer. tongue.gif

I'm checking my comp right now on whether it's PCI-E or AGP.
