I was wondering if it is possible to install Windows Vista on a 256ram computer? I want to make sure before I install cause I heard you can't go back.

http://www.microsoft...adeadvisor.mspx

just run the upgrade advisor - it'll tell you if vista can run, but 256 will NOT run vista (even vista basic) and with 512 you will be able to run vista basic, but not Aero for that you need 1Gb min (and for that you also need a pretty modern graphics card) (oh and vista needs AT LEAST 20Gb disk space over and above what you have already got on your disk

You cant use vista but you can still apply the style GUI thingy, so basically your computer will function like a vista eg the fade effect, the 3d effect etc...

Edit: Typo

Don't upgrade to Vista. It will be the worst mistake of your life. Stick with XP if you have it, even 98 is better. I have had to fix every Vista computer anyone owns around here. It's all because it is BULKY and DUMB.

The only time Microsoft will make something that does not suck is when they start producing vacuum cleaners.

Get kUbuntu.

Mine was 256 and 30gb. But then I got a gig of ram and a 250gb harddrive. I regret getting 1 gb, shoulda gotten 512 mbs and saved the rest for my eventual upgrade

And why would you want to get Vista? Not like you can run any fancy features on it, you'd just have xp (with windows blinds or something like that) with crappy drivers

oh please, so unrealistic. kubuntu is a total hassle to get games running and if you're lazy or bad at typing/searching, bad idea

Vista is great if your computer can handle it.

Vista is teh suckzorz. And Linux is more indepth than Microsoft, so what? Some of us need that kind of power. I suggest keeping Windows XP over Vista. Vista is a resource HOG. AMD 2.0Ghz 64 bit processor, Vista was CONSTANTLY eating about 40% of my resources, even when I closed EVERYTHING else out. And it pretty much took 200 Mb of RAM (Through all of it's "services") and laid claim to that.

Stick. With. XP.

nLiting XP Pro gives you the best spee don any Windows platform.

Oy, bad idea.

With only 256mb, KDE will NOT run well.. I'd reccomend Xubuntu on that comp if you're going to reccomend a *buntu distro (I'd just reccomend Xubuntu anyways. I like Xfce tongue.gif)
He -might- be able to get away with using GNOME, though.

I'd much rather use ArchLinux anyday, though biggrin.gif

I'm running on 1gb ram on ultimate and everything works perfectly fine. In fact, I've seen an increase in general computer speed.

It's really not worth $300 though. At all. Don't upgrade unless you plan to bootleg.

Dont bother even trying to install vista. I bought a brand new computer (Right before they started coming with vista) and The upgrade advisor said I should get the premium one, there were no issues found. So I install and after 3 hours its almost done, then it goes black for a second and then to a screen saying Installation failed. It restored itself and I tried 1 more time. It still didn't work so I returned it to costco.

But yea, only good thing about vista that Ive seen is it looks awesome, which you can easily find something that makes it look the same way.
