QUOTE
A widow and grandma spent the morning in jail, arrested for refusing to give a policeman her name when he tried writing her a ticket for failing to water her yard. The woman hasn't watered her lawn in more than a year, and the condition of her yard violates an Orem zoning ordinance.
....
As the enforcement officer started writing her a ticket, she tried going back in her house. That's when the officer tried to handcuff her for refusing to give her name and resisting the ticket. She tripped on the steps, scraping up her nose and elbows, leaving blood on her door, her porch and her clothes. Perry was handcuffed, fingerprinted and put in a jail cell, where she sat for more than an hour.

Wow. blink.gif If you watch the movie clip of it, the grandmother looks really freaked out from it.

Those crazy 70 year olds and not watering their lawns, it's an epidemic! tongue.gif

I guess an officer has the right to arrest you if you refuse to give your name AND walk away while he's writing your ticket. The woman sort of asked for it by the way she acted 1we8.gif

Yeah, but the cop wasn't going to initially arrest her. Just write her a ticket since she was violating "an Orem zoning ordinance". She refused to give him her name, which prevented the cop from writing her a ticket. Then, she walked away while the cop was talking to her/giving her a ticket. That's technically resisting a ticket, which is a jailable offence. It's unfortunate that it happened to someone like her, but that's the law and she chose to break it 1we8.gif

Oh yeah this could definetly go both ways, but it just looks bad for the cop because no one is going to pity him for arresting a grandma, everyone is going to be on the 70yr old lady's side. Legally he had every right to arrest her but the public still don't like how it was handled... even though there probably wasn't a beter way to do it.

True...the public tend to see the title of the article and say "OMG FIRE THAT BASTARD!!!", but they don't really look into the article and see that there probably wasn't another choice the cop could make. Especially after they see the vid of the grandma, they're definately gonna hate the cop.

Oh well...that's how the world is I guess 1we8.gif

yeah i was just going to point out that the media dosn't help much eather... but it would be an interesting headline... "oldest criminal in state arrested on her front lawn.. which hasn't been watered in generations! her charges included resisting arrest, not giving her name to a law official and ofcoarse NOT WATERING HER LAWN!!!!" somehow i don't think the public would buy it

The public would probably move on to the next article and not bother with that one after reading that long of a headline tongue.gif

yeah.. i probably wouldn't make that good of an article writer... but the media does make everything sound 10x worse then it really is.. because if they don't the news would be boring

Does it really make sense to water your garden in the middle of summer, and in the middle of a heatwave? unsure.gif

Yes. So all your grass doesn't die and make your lawn look horrible.

The officer should not be fired, he was doing his job. I swear if he gets fired that's as insane as electing Bush president AGAIN.

... and if the woman was 30 no one would've cared. I hate how people think the elderly are so damn feeble, she got what she deserved for being like that.

I read this on DIgg earlier this week and according to some articles, she had a scuffle with the officer and tripped on her steps leaving her with scrapes and bruises on her elbows and nose. dry.gif I feel bad for her.
