As much as I love weed, legalizing isn't neccesary. Sure it would be a more controlled market, but we're not talking about pills, we're talking about something grown naturally, so it's already pretty much always the same stuff no matter where you get it from. That aside, I also think that if it's legalized then the government would have to put taxes on it. So it would just end up costing more. Only thing I wouldn't mind seeing is a little moretoleration towards the drug.

That's one of looking at it, I'll keep that in mind when I'm writing it

Pros:
Legalisation would bring alot of tax money to the government
Marijuana would be cheaper if it was government controlled, as the markup on it atm is insane.
It would allow for clean weed, rather than soap bar and "glassed" weed.
It would stop the need for us to goto dealers, who may offer us other things if they have no weed.
Cons:
It would be more available so more people may try it.
It would give out a mixed signal that may make people think the government has been lying to them about drugs, and we all know how stupid most people are, so they would possibly try other drugs because of this.
Most people should know im all for legalisation, but im a realist, and i know it wont happen in england anytime soon, as people would get mad at government because they are uninformed.

Just write the essay from a libertarian perspective: The right to do what you wish with your body. Boxers do what they wish with their body, and it results in brain damage. By comparison, cannabis isn't nearly as dangerous as permanent brain damage and can be helpful towards some peoples survival (see: Steve Kubby, Peter McWilliams.)
And I know you live in canada, but in the US constitution anything not addressed is done on a state basis. I think theres something like that regarding provinces, so it should be a province vote as well.

How do you figure they'd never make any money off it?
You can grow tobacco in your own back yard, yet you don't see any of that going on very often, do you?

I do not think that would be the case. If they ever legalized it I am sure there would be restrictions as to who could actually grow it and sell it. Would be licensing and government registration involved somehow.

Yes it probably would or maybe even in its own store like a liquor store. But my response was to when you said everyone would just grow it on their own. The goverement would still need a reason to overcrowd the jails and such eh?

But if it was legal then it would be ok to grow it. Since tobacco is legal then it should be ok to grow it right?

It's the same thing if cannabis was legal.

As far as economy, America can make mass profit off of anything. Tobacco is the finest example. Theyre so confident, they go on tv to tell you not to use their product. If that doesn't put the "cock" in cocky, I don't know what does. Even if it wouldn't, its not an economic deal. The fact is, its your body, and you have the right to do what you wish with it. If you want to wipe out the deficit, then tax the Catholic Church, no need to tax weed.
