This topic is continued from a much older topic, here. Click there if you want to read about "E-Conspiracy Theorists", "The Attention Whore", or some types other people brought up.

E-People. They're all around us on the internet. An E-Person is a special type of person that shows themselves on the internet. Now, my criteria for an "E-Person" is pretty broad. I consider a personality type an "E-Person" if it meets one of the following criteria:

1. It's completely different from someone's real life personality.
2. It's not necessarily different from someone's real life personality, but due to the anonymity of the internet they show no fear in expressing it online. So it *is* different than how they *act* in real life.
3. May not be different than someone's personality in real life, however the internet has given them an outlet to express their quirks in new ways.

Some E-People traits fit only into one category, while some fit into all of them. It doesn't matter. These are just general criteria.

Anyway, today we will be discussing....

The Internet Rebel

Why are we discussing The Internet Rebel? Because their presence online is growing perhaps more than any of the other annoying E-People types currently. You'll find at least one on any site you go to, and many sites are hives of these things where at least 50% of the users or more are Internet Rebels.

Now, I'm certain my description here will apply to at least some of you. Do not be offended, for I am not targeting anyone. However if you exhibit two or more of the "symptoms" listed you may want to reconsider some of your views on life.

The Internet Rebel fits into category 3 listed above, as well as category 2 somewhat. They may have these opinions in real life, but the internet gives them an opportunity to express their opinions in annoying ways never before known to be possible.

The Short Version

In general, the Internet Rebel doesn't like anything big or popular that is outside of the Internet. If he does like something and it later becomes big and popular, he will stop liking it. The Internet Rebel has become so strong on the Internet because the net has strangely drawn a lot of these similar personality types to it. Because of this, the Rebels gather, and grow the incorrect impression that the things they believe in are in fact correct and a popular opinion with others.

Contradictory? Perhaps. But that's how The Internet Rebel works. They pick an easy target to hate, then form a big hive where they slap each other on the ass and congratulate themselves constantly. It's a strange phenomenon because Internet Rebel types actually tend to be quite smart. My theory is that even though they are smart, they just really don't know how the world works and thus falsely believe their opinions are truth, or that their behavior is acceptable.

And now, onto the specific symptoms... If you show more than one of these yourself, get help before it's too late!

The Symptoms

Microsoft Hate/Linux Fanboyism

Lots of people hate Microsoft. Microsoft is pretty much just like any other business out there, but Internet Rebel's hate Microsoft because they are the biggest one that has the most steam going against it already. You can point out how some of MS's tactics that they consider shady are done by all business the world around, but don't expect them to believe it. They are absolutely convinced that all companies are exactly like Google and have pizza parties every day for lunch.

Most of the people in this category are hypocrites and are actually using Microsoft products (including their OS) at the time they hold this opinion. The second largest subgroup uses Linux, but is completely unrealistic about what the product does.

The Linux Fanboy/Microsoft Hater will never acknowledge a strong point of MS products. They will always insist that Linux is better than Windows at everything, and if Linux doesn't do something that Windows does, it's because Windows users are stupid or because it doesn't *need* to do that. They will always insist opensource software is better than non-opensource software. Their belief that amateurs are better developers than professionals is unwavering.

Linux and MS, opensource and closed source, all have their own merits. The Linux Fanboy/MS Hater will never acknowledge this.

Common signs: Typing Microsoft as "Micro$oft" or constantly telling people to get Firefox. Throwing a fit if someone says something good about MS or bad about Linux.

The Libertarian

Being a libertarian is the new fad on the Internet. Being a republican or a democrat is too popular a choice, so these people decided to ally themselves with a third party. While Libertarians do in fact have more than 200,000 registered voters and 600 people in office nationwide (this includes lower things like council members, school board members, etc in the US) it is still tiny in comparison to the other parties.

However, on the Internet the number of libertarians you'll see is grossly disproportionate to the number of libertarians there are in real life.

Internet Rebels cling to libertarianism because it is basically anti-government. Now, instead of criticizing government and being labeled rebels and anarchists, they can ally themselves with the slightly more respected libertarians.

Common signs: Constant criticism of the government (Bush not included, he's a different issue) and support of Republican issues specifically excluding drug use an religion. The vast majority of people who claim to be libertarians support at least some form of drug legalization, and in many cases will admit to doing drugs themselves if you ask. This is just a theory of course, but I personally believe the drug issue is one of the reasons so many flock to this party, even though I hardly think the party itself would want them.

Ron Paul Supporter

Last I saw, Ron Paul enjoys a whole 2% support with Republican voters. If the election were held on the Internet, however, it seems like it'd be more like 50%. Yes, travel the Internet and it's not hard to find support for Ron Paul. The two main reasons are 1) he is against the war in Iraq, and 2) there is a video of him on the Internet years ago criticizing the war on drugs, which the above-mentioned libertarians are all for hating.

Best of all, these people, who would typically align with democrats, can pull the ultimate rebel move and support a republican. This is the draw of Ron Paul.

Warning: Criticizing Ron Paul on the internet in certain places will bring you lots of flames, and will bring out some really crazy people. I recently said Ron Paul wouldn't win the election elsewhere, and got many colorful replies, including "It doesn't matter, the election will just be rigged again." And other conspiracy theories followed.

The Raging Atheist / Anti-Christian

First of all, a disclaimer. I am not referring to all atheists. Being an atheist does not put you in this category. Only being a raging atheist as I describe below puts you in this category.

The Raging Atheist is one of the most annoying people on the Internet, and no, it's not because of their opinion. The Raging Atheist constantly criticizes Christianity wherever they go, without any provocation. They upload anti-Christian videos to youtube and flare up debates about how God doesn't exist out of nowhere. If someone does say they believe in God, The Raging Atheist will call them stupid for believing it and go into a wall of text tirade about why God doesn't exist.

What's funny about The Raging Atheist is that one of their major complaints is that they don't want religion forced upon them. What they don't seem to take into account is that they are given so much religious freedom that they are here on the Internet being more fervent than the supposed Christian extremists that they are so worried about.

Common Signs: Will make wall of text posts saying how God isn't real, simultaneously saying they don't want beliefs pushed upon them. They don't seem to realize that they are simultaneously pushing their beliefs on others much more than anyone else has on them. In large part only has a beef with Christianity. Will mostly ignore Muslims, Hindus, and any other religion. (thus they are more "anti-Christian" than true atheists)

The Drug Bookworm

The drug bookworm is typically a user of drugs now or at least was at some point in the near past. Drug bookworms insist that drugs are not harmful if done in moderation. They will not pay attention to any statistics you cite because if the statistics or what you say does not fit into their perfect little definition of what constitutes safe drug use, they will completely disregard your opinion. This person is unwilling to see beyond their own personal experiences.

Their name comes from an oft-repeated phrase by The Drug Bookworm, "I've read about it". They assume that the only written texts about drugs support their opinion, and thus reading it in a book makes it fact. They do not realize that books and studies also state opinions against their own.

Here is a picture of a Drug Bookworm

Common signs: Frequently links to studies and talks about reading books, but will completely disregard opposing studies. If all other arguments fail, they'll call you a sheep. Will insist any anti-drug studies are government lies, and you are a sheep for believing them. Their own evidence, however, is unarguable, because they've read books.

The Cure

Most of the people like this are angsty teens or pre-teens without real life experience, so the only cure is to grow up. If you suspect now that you may be an Internet Rebel, take a step back and analyze your beliefs. Did you genuinely come up with them on your own? Or did a group of people you thought were cool hold them, and you too decided to hold that opinion for it? Have you looked at all sides of the issues? Do you believe what you do because you know it's right, or because you want it to be?

Feedback to this post...

Once again, do not think I am talking about you. You may think that you are unique and OMG HE'S TALKING ABOUT ME!!!!111 RAGE!!! I am not. These are common internet "trendy personalities" and if you think you're unique, you're wrong. Chances are you just picked up on it from someone else without realizing it. The truth hurts.

LOL boy do I know several of these of all types. Seriously. Again not naming names (in fact I'd say the majority aren't on codex anyways) but... seriously LOL.

Oh yes and you forgot to mention the music rebels.
"OMG I LUV EVANESCENCE" says the outcast when hearing their first major single thinking of course they are the only ones to know therefore taking possession of the band.
"OMG I LUV EVANESCENCE" says the popular 16 year old girl.
"NUH UH UR NOT ALLOWED THEIR MINE" says the outcast severely depressed that her band has been tainted by the "popular crowd." Instead of loving the music for what it is regardless of popularity the outcast proceeds to reject the band simply because their "worst enemies lolz" like the music as well and we can't have that, can we? They claim superiority over others due to their "excellent taste in music." Mostly these people are also the non-conformists. While this occurs a great deal in real life as well it appears more often on the internet especially in deviantart's Music forum where 13 year old boys enjoy talking about how cool Linkin Park still is.

All drugs are safe in moderation as long as your body reacts positively to it. So that kind of disproves your theory. But I completely agree with the rest.

It's the same thing for people that oppose drugs, in your definition of drug bookworms... So it's kind of a double standard there, the ones that do the same thing, except for the opposite side, are targeted in your post...

That's because the topic is "The Internet Rebel" and being anti-drug is not rebellious in the least. And thanks tongue.gif

And Frizzle... my implication was not that drugs cannot be unharmful in moderation, but that "The Drug Bookworm" type of person is completely unwilling to factor the human nature of those unable to handle moderation into their logic. They are also unwilling to factor in that they may have a time in the future (depressing event) that causes them to lose control of their own ability to moderate. Their only perspective is that of themselves so far, as opposed to others or themselves in the future. Considering all sides, not just the acceptable case where it's safe is necessary for a proper debate. My problem with them is that they shrug off all the negative things drugs have done as though it's nothing, bears no impact on society, and it's okay because they haven't been hurt by it. One cannot possibly take a pro-drug position reasonably and ignore all the bad that comes along with it.

I'd be a lot more tolerant of pro-drug people if they could acknowledge the negatives in their arguments instead of ignoring them. Then I would not lump them into a general category like this. This category is for the people who have tunnel vision on the issue and only see from their narrow perspective, not all pro-drug people in general.

Anyway, not looking to start an argument on the drug thing. Just explaining what I wrote more.

Haha...I suppose I would be a 'raging atheist', then. I can never really find a good place to stop o.O Honestly, I studied Hinduism, Judaism, and Islam...but if I am on a site that discuss religion and spirituality of all kinds, it's only the Christians that harass me. In fact, it's only Christians and atheists on these sites. A good observation: other religions have better things to do. I would LOVE to have a discussion with a Hindu or Muslim, and I know a Jew in real life...but I need to find one first, heh.

This is a good article, though ^-^ Informative, heh.

I am not fond of the rebels, usually. Yes, I like Firefox, but only because I got it a while back and am now used to how it is set up. Yes, I dislike windows, but only because stupid people at my last job could not manage to find anything on their windows computers...so, maybe a windows LITE should be made that makes sense to these idiots in computer jobs. Oh, and mine sucks. But again, I am more comfortable with windows than mac, and linux just doesn't seem worth my time o.O

And if I see another LAWL Green day rulez thing, I might just go out there and take down Green day. It was Good Charlotte before, who sounded very similar and preached similar things, and now it is Green day. A whole new fad for the 'rebels'.

I like System of a Down, Rob Zombie, some Manson stuff, Korn, and KMFDM. I liked it before it was all pretty mainstream, and I still like it now. But I have a lot of friends that hated System of a Down once a few preps liked it, and so on. Bloody annoying.

    Okay, I'm done rambling ^-^

Well, on a religion forum it's not as bad. When it becomes a problem is when you are on a forum that has nothing to do with religion and start in on it with people that were just minding their own business. A good example: Someone posts a link to a news article where religion is involved. A raging atheist responds by talking about the crazy ass "documentary" Zeitgeist and how Christianity is the cause of all the world's wars.

Some raging atheists take it a step further and post such things as their own topics without any provocation, basically becoming fanatic preachers of their non-religion.

Haha, I like the Microsoft hate part. I'm guilty of it, in a way. Except it is for the 360 and Windows ME. I still think Vista has its own share of problems, but whatever. And I don't really think Linux is the best ever.

There's nothing wrong with being annoyed by things that don't work, but when it comes to Microsoft there's an important thing to remember: For every thing that annoys you that doesn't work, there are a hundred things that do work. Having developed software myself, I know I'd be pissed off if I spent hundreds of hours on something and it was 95% bug free but people got all pissy and called it crap because of the 5% that wasn't.

These things of course need to be fixed, but it's definitely taking it to an extreme when people really get into the MS hate/Linux fanboy stage. As long as you keep a realistic opinion about it and recognize that everything has its faults and everything has its things that its good at though, you're not really bad enough to be considered an "Internet Rebel" in this sense, I think.

Ah, I see. ^-^ I respond to religious discussions, and I honestly try to keep it from being an 'argh, I hate teh Jesus!' fest...but sometimes, it happens. I usually act like that lion everyone sees at the zoo: laying around, bored, don't care...then someone is poking me with a stick to see if I'll growl, and I lash out. I, a crazy atheist, actually backed out of a site because it was too bloody cut throat. Atheists and Christians swearing at each other with vicious intentions (I was called a slut o.O) to the point where it seemed like a massive attempt to kill each other, not discuss.

So, maybe I'm a little of a raging atheist...but not enough to be annoying, no? I like to think that, haha.

EDIT: And yes, if someone posts that blood Zeitgeist video again, I'll go on a rampage >.> Enough. There's plenty of videos on the web to poke and prod. I think that thing needs to be retired before it gets more hits than google.

xD I think even Microsoft acknowledges that ME was probably their worst release EVAR. I used to run on ME myself but as you've said Windows isn't as much of a bark up to justify bashing it as someone's "duty." I think everyone's a little bit of an internet rebel and I think it's human nature but then there's those who take it to the extreme. Just like those who are attention whores. We're all attention whores but then there's the EXTREME ATTENTION WHORE SEX LOLZ. And that, my friend is what creates epic lulz.

Do you know what's great about Ron Paul? Well, for starters, I know NOTHING about him, so I can assume that I don't care to know. Anywho, the great thing is that he is, uh...well....

Okay, look. It's been a bad run for America. We've got, what, Bush and Cheney? Cheney, by the by, scares the shit right out of me. I would want Bush impeached if not for Cheney -shudders-. Anything would be better at this point. If it came to it, I guess Ron Paul would be better than some of the other republicans; namely the ones that have identical policies to Bush but promise change. However, I'm pulling for Obama, or hell, maybe even a third party. At this point, I am just sick of righties and lefties. We need a middle-y person. Real bad.

Here's an example of a Ron Paul belief that is probably not well known among his "supporters" who only know him from his internet clips, at least until the debate last night... He wants to disband the CIA, FBI, and IRS.

Yeah, nutjob. Although this might still pull in support for him from the internet's "I hate all police and law" crowd. Fortunately they aren't the voting type.

i personally believe the reason for Ron Paul being so popular is that although he's registered as a republican, he reaches out to all parties and actually fits without lying and flip-flopping. most polls outside of the internet that Ron Paul is part of are strictly republican, but online it's free range and anyone can vote. he attracts a very strong % of the libertarians, a lot of democrats who are possibly dissatisfied w/ the current candidates/democrats who are pro life, and republicans who are anti-war.

Ah, here's something from Wikipedia on Ron Paul:

    QUOTE
He confirmed during an appearance on The Colbert Report that among the entities he would like to eliminate completely are the Department of Education, Department of Homeland Security, Department of Energy, IRS, FEMA, NAFTA, WTO, NATO, and UNICEF, although of the last, "That wouldn't be one of my targets."[118] During the September 5, 2007 Republican debate, the CIA was included in a similar list cited by moderator Chris Wallace. Paul did not refute the allegation that he would eliminate it if given the opportunity.[119]

I won't argue that I agree with some of his points, but some of his other issues (like this one) are so insane that I don't care what his opinions on issues I agree with him on are, I just can't support him. It's madness.
