Religious & Scientific - Mayan Calender
The Mayan calender is actually a network of different calenders. The Maya's where extremely good astronomers, some debate if they had our present day technology they would run rings around our current day astronomers ! Their calender has been used to accurately
predict events in Astronomy such as: partial & full, Solar & Lunar eclipses; Calculation to find the exact position of Venus. If you are a modern day astronomer you may have difficulty doing these things, particularly the second one however its all already done for you. The Mayan calender also states that a time of great change will happen in 2012. Some believe this is the end of life, but others say its end of life as we know it, this I believe is what gives a lot of theories heavy support, they may have been an ancient civilization but they sure were smart cave men
Religious & Scientific - Nibiru
This subject is highly-debated but due to religious & scientific records I think its interesting. This theory states that there is a planet out in the far reaches of the sun's gravity. Scientific records show that Neptune and Uranus have a unexplainable irregularities in their orbit, which is said to be caused by an undiscovered mass out in space. Its said to be between the mass of Mars & Earth. Which brings astronomers doubtful about the existence of Nibiru.
Nibiru is supposedly home to biblical 'aliens' the Anunnaki. As Nibiru approaches we are supposed to have an increase of natural disasters, which funnily enough have been on the rise in for the past say 10 - 25 years. Nibiru's gravitational field/magnetic field scientists say could stop Earth's rotation for 3 days thus "three days of darkness" predicted in the Bible. Some say that Nibiru is the Star of Bethlehem, you know the star the three wise men followed. Funnily enough the projected date of Earth being defaced by this event coincides with the Mayan Calender theory.
Apparently last time Nibiru approached Earth was the time of the 'Great Flood', I think a lot of us would know about Noah & his arc ? This is what they say caused the floods. If the above does happen there will quite possibly be massive loss of life. Bare in mind this is just a theory.
Scientific - Global change
This theory is one we can visual relate to, it involves the distribution of mass around the earth, say if the polar ice caps were to drift or melt, this would redistribute the mass around the earth and the re-distribution of weight would cause the magnetic poles to realign themselves.

What does this mean ?
Well its slightly debated but massive climate change (more than what we are experiencing) including massive earthquakes, tsunami's between 300ft - 1 mile high (1 mile high tsunami is probably stretching the truth a little but I'm simply just giving you both extremities of the rumored height).
Theres also a few theories containing stories of the anti-christ but due to the difference in religion I don't think I'll go into that one but basically if you want to know, he dies in the polar shift. Also theres theories of a change in the Earth's vibrations which will make Earth pass into a different dimension, which will be assisted by extra-terrestrial beings (its actually quite a good read if you look into that one). One other thing I'll add is the spread of disease is rumored to be effected as theres some that say the Earth's magnetic field sync with our immune system, others say the magnetic field does a lot more than that to us.
